Publisher's summary

This collection of stories for children has been written by notable authors from Urdu literature. Most authors in this selection are little known for the stories they have penned for young audiences. From traditional tales to everyday narratives, this compilation offers listeners an insight into stories old and new, with fantasy, humour, and a charming taste of the Urdu language.

Story Synopses

"Kammu Nikkummu": Designated as useless or “Nikkummu”, young Nihaal vies for his grandmother’s affection against all odds.

"Jo Yuun Hota Tau Kya Hota": Roles are reversed and the world turns topsy-turvy for young Farida, when all the adults in her family begin behaving like children.

"Do Lakarrhaaray": A short tale with a message about the evils of greed.

"Chacha Chakkan nay Tasveer Taangi": The ever-meddlesome Chacha Chakkan creates pandemonium when he volunteers to hang a painting on the wall.

"Sunehri Mujassamay": The answers to a simple puzzle reveal thoughts on human behaviour and life lessons.

"Tum Buk Tu": A retelling of the well-known fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, “Rumplestiltskin”, this story is charming adaptation written by Ashraf Suboohi, and is particularly delightful in language and expression.

"Meethay Jootay": This short first-person narrative leaves the author puzzled about how the leather of a shoe can be so delectable.
