In Babel, no one needs to speak. For generations, humanity has lived in total transparency: thoughts, emotions, and needs flowing through a perfect telepathic web. No secrets, no lies — and above all, no loneliness.

But the web is saturated. Children are beginning to be born "opaque": healthy in body, silent within. When Enos comes into the world in absolute stillness, his mother, Adama, must invent a kind of love no human has ever practiced: reading a cry, a touch, a glance, where feeling alone was once enough.
