The Ekklesia stands at a crossroads.
Where accountability has been abused, trust has eroded. Where accountability has been neglected, character has weakened. Where leaders have been insulated from correction, harm has multiplied. Where individuals have resisted correction, fragmentation has followed.
Yet Scripture never presents accountability as optional.
“But exhort one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ lest anyone of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” (Hebrews 3:13, LSB)
This command assumes proximity. It assumes shared life. It assumes responsibility.
The Newer Testament does not construct an empire of hierarchy. It reveals the governing guidelines of the New Creation.
It describes a people transformed internally, not controlled externally.
“And be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.” (Ephesians 5:21, LSB)
Mutual submission is not weakness. It is strength under divine order.
The Ekklesia cannot mature without accountability. But it also cannot mature if accountability is legislated, imposed, or weaponized.
The question is not whether we need accountability. The question is what kind.
