Three years ago Bartholomew "Bat" Reese's life changed forever. He saw his father, and two of his father's friends, get struck by lightning on a golf course. Six months ago he discovered that we are not alone here. Or at least, here in Kentucky. He knows that because he has seen them. Today his life will change one more time. After today, his life will be a lot more interesting.

This story begins when eighth-grader, Sylvia Thompson, invites seventh-grader, "Bat" Reese, to the Sadie Hawkins Day Dance at East Jessamine Middle School. At the dance, Sylvia discovers that Bat has a secret. A secret so big that it makes her hair stand on end. After the dance, neither Bat nor Sylvia would ever be alone again, even when they were apart.
