The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Terence Keel. Classified as a black male, Dr. Keel is a "Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles where [he teaches] in the Department of African American Studies and the UCLA Institute for Society and Genetics." Dr. Keel also directs "the UCLA Lab for BioCritical Studies and [serves] as the Advisor for Structural Competency and Innovation for the UCLA Simulation Center at the David Geffen School of Medicine." In the midst of all this constructive work, Dr. Keel found time to visit Seattle's Elliott Bay Books to discuss his new tome, The Coroner's Silence: Death Records and the Hidden Victims of Police Violence. The text examines the how large numbers of black males and non-white males in general die under suspicious circumstances in officer custody. Dr. Keel notes that White coroners and medical examiners have a history of excluding black people from this profession and skillfully using language to conceal the wrongful death of black male prisoners.
