When Certainty Makes Us Blind

“I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see may see and those who do see may become blind.” — John 9:39

Sometimes when we are most certain that we are right, we may actually be seeing the least clearly.

And sometimes when we know we are still searching, we are closer to the truth than we realize.

The Greek word translated judgment here (κρίμα – krima) is less about punishment and more about discernment—bringing things into the light so they can be seen clearly.

The man who had been blind begins to see.

But the people who were certain they understood everything reveal a different kind of blindness.

Sometimes the greatest obstacle to truth is the assumption that we already possess it.

Our understanding is always partial.

Our vision is always incomplete.

So faith invites us to walk with humility—open to the possibility that we still have more to learn, and more love to practice.

And sometimes the clearest vision begins the moment we admit that we do not yet see everything clearly.
