The Mortician

I've always known I was different.

My name is Seven Grey, and I hang out with dead people. Yes, Seven like the number, and yes… literal dead people. I'm the only mortician in a small town tucked away in backwoods Maine, and I've known this was my dream job since the day they asked us on our first day of Kindergarten. I know who I am, and I don't apologize for it. Death is just different for me, which is why my second job works even better than my first.

They call me "The Cleaning Lady".

People die. It's just a part of life. How certain ones die is none of my business, and I don't ask questions when I work for bad people for ludicrous price tags, making their dirty deeds disappear like they never happened. They call, I clean, I leave.

So how did I end up being the center of attention for the heir to the Irish mob with the threat of accessory to murder charges hanging over my head? Well, that's a story worthy of small-town gossip.

Malek Byrne is the most deranged, annoying, ridiculous… beautiful… persistent… pain in my ass. I rue the day that he inserted himself into my life. But he's just about impossible to resist, not just because he forces a smile that hasn't been part of my dark wardrobe in years… but because he refuses to leave me the hell alone.

He drops bodies… I clean them. It should be that simple.

It's not.

He's got a list as long as my name, and I've saddled up for a ride I can't get off of…

Even if I wanted to…

Tropes: morally gray FMC and MMC; forced proximity; deranged golden retriever and black cat; he falls first; frenemies to lovers; touch her and die; stalker romance; ridiculously dark humor.

My one and only complaint is that it wasn't longer! I wish his number and her name was like 30 or something, then everything would have lasted longer haha if u know, u know 😜
I hope more books in the series start showing up on Audible sooner than later! This is a standalone with a HEA, but we need more stories of other crazy people in this world!!! Keep them coming HB Elliott, and thank you for giving us a glimpse into your kinky, dark mind 😉

Sooo good!! Stop reading reviews and just get it lol 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

This book is insanely good—I genuinely can’t believe I didn’t pick it up sooner. It completely caught me off guard in the best way.

The dynamic is exactly my kind of thing: a Wednesday Addams–type FMC—dark, sharp, and unapologetically herself—paired with an MMC who’s equal parts unhinged (in that intense, stalker-ish way) and oddly soft, like a golden retriever when it comes to her. It’s such a wild but compelling contrast, and it just works.

And I especially love how all the misfits came together to protect and support their secret keeper—it added so much heart and depth to the story.

Books like this honestly make me pause and wonder why real-life men rarely measure up. The ones in stories are fiercely loyal, willing to go to any length—to fight, chase, and cross impossible distances just to win their woman and keep choosing her. It’s hard not to compare when, in reality, some people walk away the moment things get difficult.

And the narrators? So good. You can feel how into the story they are—there are moments where they actually laugh or chuckle while delivering their lines, and that just makes everything feel more alive and authentic.

I’m honestly obsessed. This book hit every note for me, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

i love this book so much!
