Harriet has arrived at Hartfield with a dilemma: the charming farmer Mr. Robert Martin has sent her a letter with an offer of marriage. Emma has to give him credit; the letter is much better-written than she was expecting. Nonetheless, she can't imagine her dear little friend Harriet married to a farmer. Of course, Emma knows she mustn't influence Harriet's decision. It should be all her own. But it can't hurt for Emma to give some gentle advice - after all, what are friends for? If anything, it would be doing her friend a disservice not to share her wisdom.
