Living as Light That Points Beyond Us
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
— Matthew 5:16
Most of us want to be respected, admired, and appreciated. That desire is deeply human.
And Jesus doesn’t dismiss good deeds. He assumes them.
The question he raises is not whether we do good—but why.
When our actions are driven by the need for approval, recognition, or status, they may still help. But they rarely heal as deeply as they could. They tend to circle back toward us.
Jesus invites us into something deeper—a way of life shaped by love.
He calls us to let our lives be shaped by love—love of God, ourselves, and our neighbors as ourselves. When our good deeds grow out of that grounding, they carry a different weight. They create space for others to thrive. They restore dignity. They reflect something larger than our own effort.
When our lives are rooted in love, our good works don’t point to us.
They point beyond us—to the God who is already at work, and toward a better way of living together in the world—the way the Gospel writer calls the kingdom of heaven.
