Scientists at the University of Cambridge have discovered that menopause causes a decrease in grey matter in the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for memory, showing changes similar to those seen in Alzheimer's disease. The study analysed data from more than 125,000 women and 11,000 MRI brain scans from the UK Biobank. Researchers found that hormone replacement therapy does not ease these effects, which may explain why symptoms like brain fog, poor concentration and anxiety are common during menopause.
