Reaching for Agreement — Part 1

“Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be knit together in the same mind and the same purpose.”

— 1 Corinthians 1:10

We live in a time of deep division and growing polarization.

We are divided—and the reservoir of goodwill we once had for one another has run low, or run dry.

Worse still, the flames of our divisions are often stoked and fanned by those who profit from conflict and gain power by keeping us at odds with one another. It is easier to rule a people who are busy fighting each other.

But this is not new. Humanity has been here before.

And in moments like this, we are called to remember who we are meant to be:

family—brothers, sisters, siblings—children of God, bound to one another whether we like it or not.

Agreement does not begin with uniformity.

It begins with remembering our shared belonging.

And that is where the work of hope begins.
