How To Pray For People In Power

In our anger and frustration, we sometimes like the disciples wish we could call down holy fire to destroy those who are doing wrong.

Like the Psalmist we are tempted to ask God to pour wrath and vengeance on the evil doers.

This is particularly true when we think about those in authority who misuse their power and influence.

The early Jesus movement lived in a time where they faced significant persecution from those in power. Yet they were determined that:

“…supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity.” - from 1 Timothy 1:1-2

We aren’t praying for the wealth, power, and success of the political, economic, and cultural leaders of our society.

We are praying that these leaders speak words, make decisions and take actions that allow all of us to live peaceably and in dignity.

Whether it is in their hearts to do good or not, we pray for them to do so anyway.
