This book was just the right combination of humor, candor, and encouragement that I didn’t even realize I needed. The narrator put so much personality in the words that it was like listening to a friend who gets it exactly right when it comes to dealing with perfectionism and self-doubt. The interplay of laugh-out-loud scenarios and intensely relatable wisdom just made it completely compelling from beginning to end.

How the writer integrated personal anecdotes with usable tools just felt true and do-able. I adored that tips for accepting your body were non-judgmental and compassionate, like a comfortable conversation, not a lecture. The practices for each day were easy enough to do, yet strong enough to be effective. The tone was fun, yet real emotional depth was present, so that advice just got absorbed without being heavy, overwhelming, or preachy.

At times, I even stopped mid-stream just to absorb a point or make a note to myself. The sections regarding turning off that self-criticizing voice were particularly powerful for me. The inspiration to greet yourself with compassion even on the messy days is something that I will hold on to long after hearing.

By the time I finished, I was feeling lighter, more optimistic, and strangely motivated to begin treating myself with the same kindness and compassion that I would a good friend. It doesn’t often come along that you find something that tickles your funny bone, makes you ponder, and actually changes how you address yourself, but this book did just that. I’ll be returning to it again and again when my supply is running short on courage and compassion. Highly, highly recommended for anyone who would like to be more comfortable in their own skin.

If you are looking to improve your self-esteem and/or banish insecurities for good, you need this book. The author provides a supportive and encouraging voice to help you learn to, not only accept yourself, but love yourself in the process. It’s been said that you have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others. This book teaches you how to do just that. I especially liked the section on overcoming obstacles and embracing change. You are not defined by your past, and you can forge a new future. This is a great book!
