Stan Paregien began collecting family history and photos in about 1970. He and his wife, Peggy, became frequent visitors to county court houses, history centers, and cemeteries in Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Then, as he acquired home computers and better access to internet resources, he spent countless hours of the day and night doing genealogical research far and wide. He published his work in 1974. That was a 118 page collection titled, A Paregien History. Thirty-two years after that, having collected a mass of information and photos, he self-published Paregien Family History: 1816 to 2006. It contained a massive 676 pages with hundreds of photos, with a full index. That version is only available from the author on a DVD. Fourteen years after the 2006 book, Stan published The Paregien Family from 1816 to 1940: Plus the Paregine, Peargin & Pearigen Lines. It is a complete reorganization of the material and ends at 1940. It has 238 pages and lots of photos. This is no run-of-the-mill genealogical book with bare facts. The author, a master writer and storyteller, shares the context behind the facts. He puts muscle and skin and faces on those bare bones. The names mentioned here come through as hardy men and women, each with many virtues and at least a few flaws. The author helps today’s readers understand these ancestors had the same human needs that we feel today.
