A warm, funny, "outstandingly uplifting" story about love, loss and the unexpected surprises that life (and the afterlife) can throw our way. Grief... A Comedy is the follow-up to Larkin's hit one-woman show critics called

"A story that could truly change your life” Entertainment Now

“A gorgeous love story" Fest Magazine

"Leaves you believing joy really can be found after loss” The Daily Mail.

What if your soulmate died…and then came back to help you find love again? Alison and Bhima found true, once-in-a-lifetime love for the first time in their 50’s. It was the kind of love that changes everything. Then he died. Six weeks later, Bhima appeared at Alison’s kitchen table, as charming as ever, with one clear purpose: to help her find love again. It's imaginary of course. Or is it?

When Archbishop Desmond Tutu heard what happened, he wrote to Alison saying "your story needs the widest circulation possible because it will bring hope. You must do whatever you have to do to make sure this story is told to as many people as possible. And not just in an email to me!" So, Alison created a solo comedy show, Grief... A Comedy, with music by Emmy award winner Gary Schreiner, and wrote the funny, warm, life-enhancing story you are about to hear. Exclusively for this Audible edition, the recording is followed by the song Grief Is Just Part Of The Deal, from the show Grief... A Comedy, written and performed by Alison Larkin, music by Gary Schreiner, lyrics by Alison Larkin.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"In this beautiful memoir, a 50-something woman and a South Indian businessman/climate activist fall in love—both for the first time. He dies shortly after they become engaged but reappears in her life to help her find love again. The ensuing conversations couldn't have been performed by anyone but author Alison Larkin, a veteran narrator known for her exceptional performances and skill with accents. With her impressive emotional range and vulnerability, her performance embraces the experience of truly falling in love, the deadening weight of losing love, and the emerging freedom to believe—with the help of her fiancé's reappearance—that love in all its forms will be possible again. This joyous audiobook will make listeners laugh and open their hearts to life's possibilities." —AudioFile Magazine

I really enjoyed the range of the narrator and the honesty about her life and loss. I met her recently when we were both reading at the mount I told her about my loss so she suggested her book. I’m glad I got both the book and the audiobook because it’s a lovely hearing some songs from the show. And her great accents.

Quite a performance

There have been few to rival the romantic love story of Alison and Bhima in “Grief…A Comedy” since John and Ameera in “Without Benefit of Clergy” 135 years ago. The critic Angus Wilson called that one the “most sheerly beautiful of all Kipling’s stories.” The relevant phrase there is “sheerly beautiful.”
But for all the temptation to compare this audiobook to the romantic screenplays for Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze in “Ghost” or Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison in “The Ghost and Mrs. Muir,” the multitalented Alison Larkin’s self-narrated true story is more compelling. It is even funnier than Mrs. Muir and wiser and spiritually more triumphant than “Ghost.” There is here a wonderful aspect that treats the desperate sorrow of death upon a great love with healing laughter and rises from a dirge to a transcending anthem.
As a book in print it must be said that “Grief…A Comedy” is remarkable literature. Adding to all of this in the audiobook is the skill of Ms. Larkin in bringing everything alive with her incomparable ability to reproduce the accents and personalities of her compelling characters.

I absolutely LOVE this audiobook. Alison is one of my favorite narrators and I've listened to her first book The English American more than once. This story is a very romantic love story that is light but deep at the same time. It is funny and it is also very moving. It give you hope that no matter what is happening in your life, you can choose to live with joy. I loved the character of Bhima who is very funny and the banter between the two of them is great. I loved it when Bhima went on on-ine dates with Alison. I didn't want this audiobook to end. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. A MUST LISTEN!

Everyone should hear this audiobook!

Alison Larkin's powerful memoir, 'Grief, a Comedy,' made me laugh out loud, weep, and marvel in amazement. Through intimate memories of finding and losing her one chance at true, unconditional love, she instilled in me a profound appreciation for life's most basic blessings. 'I can walk, I can breathe, I can speak and see and hear...' These simple truths never resonated with such force until I walked in Alison's footsteps.

Spoken in her own jovial voice, renown for her spot-on accents and characterizations, Alison shows us how to transform tragedy into joy with grace, style, and wonderful warm humor. My daily life has more meaning after reading this delightful and profound masterpiece!"
