The 2004 BBC Mini-Series North & South Continues
***NEWLY REVISED & EDITED - APRIL 2025***
As the northbound train departs from London, John Thornton and Margaret Hale embark on a journey that will reshape their lives forever. Their chance meeting, their touch, and their unspoken promises have sealed a love neither can deny. But love is never without its trials.
Back in Milton, challenges await—social divides, past wounds, and unforeseen obstacles that threaten to pull them apart. As John and Margaret navigate the complexities of their deepening bond, the lives of those around them—Hannah Thornton, Nicholas Higgins, and the workers of Marlborough Mills—continue to unfold in unexpected ways.
This compelling continuation of the North & South BBC mini-series delves deeper into their love story, exploring themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the enduring power of love amidst the grit of industrial England.
For fans who longed for more after the final credits roll, John & Margaret – Coming Home With Me brings them back to the unforgettable characters and places they never wanted to leave.
EXCERPT:
Arresting, pale-blue eyes met her own, and Margaret exhaled in astonishment at their hue. She had never been so near to him before; she had always thought his eyes a stormy indigo, often reflecting his mood. In the light of the train’s cabin, however, his usually chiselled features appeared softened and youthful.
“What are you thinking?” John asked quietly, his thumb gliding across her chin.
His touch, coupled with the warmth in his voice, was something Margaret had yet to grow accustomed to. A slip of a smile formed as she answered, “You are not so frightening now.”
John chuckled, nodding once. “I was a monster, I know. I suppose you had every reason to think so.”
“Indeed, by your manner,” she agreed. “However, that was before I understood you. I speak also of your appearance. You are quite striking.”
“Striking?” His brow rose. “So, you think me handsome now?”
“I believe I always found you handsome, but your grim demeanour often overshadowed it, making you unapproachable,” Margaret said, smiling as she took hold of his hand. “Otherwise, I would have returned your gloves.”
“You thought me a brute, I imagine, especially on that first day,” John said with a wry grin. “It often had me speculating how things might have been if we had met under different circumstances.”
“First impressions did not serve us well that day,” Margaret replied, lifting her gaze to his.
“And what is this about my gloves? I lost them ages ago.”
“No, you did not. Rather, I have them.” His questioning look prompted her to continue. “You left them behind on the day...the day I refused you,” she clarified regretfully.
Margaret saw him draw a deep breath, clearly recalling the painful memory. “I intended to return them, for it made little sense to keep them—especially since I believed I disliked you very much.”
“You certainly convinced me of that,” John reflected. “And I admit, I can be rather, as you say, unapproachable.”
“Will you forgive me for that day?” Margaret asked. “I was taken by surprise and felt cornered by your admission.” Lowering her gaze, she added softly, “I wished I could withdraw many of my words.”
His sudden, rich laughter startled her.
“After what occurred at the station, Miss Hale, do you imagine there is anything I would not forgive you for?”
“I agree. It would be uncharitable if you did not,” she said, trying to stifle a growing smile. “And, John, I will not have you asking for my forgiveness for what just occurred on that bench. I will never be sorry.”
