This verse is from the Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 13, Verse 19 . The translation is:

  • Prakṛtiṁ puruṣam caiva viddhy anādi ubhāv api
Vikārāṁś ca guṇānś caiva viddhi prakṛti-sambhavān

  • "Understand that both the material nature (Prakriti) and the individual soul (Purusha) are beginningless. All the modifications (Vikāra) and qualities (Guṇas) are born of material nature."

In this verse, Lord Krishna explains the relationship between Prakriti (the material nature) and Purusha (the individual soul or consciousness):

  1. Prakṛtiṁ puruṣam caiva: Both Prakriti (the material nature) and Purusha (the individual soul or consciousness) are eternal and beginningless. They are the fundamental forces that govern the universe and individual existence.

  2. Viddhy anādi ubhāv api: Both Prakriti and Purusha have no origin; they have always existed, with no beginning or end.

  3. Vikārāṁś ca guṇānś caiva: The modifications (Vikāra) of nature, and the qualities (Guṇas—Sattva, Rajas, Tamas) inherent in all beings, arise from Prakriti. These transformations and qualities are the results of the material nature's influence.

This verse highlights the distinction between the eternal material nature (Prakriti) and the eternal individual soul (Purusha), with the modifications and qualities of the world being born from Prakriti. The interplay between the two governs the existence of all beings in the universe.
