PADRES POSTCAST: CRONENWORTH and TATIS HOMER, BULLPEN SHINES in PADRES 4-3 WIN Over Atlanta Braves

Jake Cronenworth hit a go-ahead home run leading off the bottom of the 8th inning to break a 3-3 tie and push the San Diego Padres (2-0) past the Atlanta Braves (0-2) by the score of 4-3. Cronenworth drove the 2nd pitch from Dylan Lee (0-1) deep into the right field seats, a blast that had his teammates running up out of the dugout and sent the Petco Park fans into a frenzy.

Fernando Tatis Jr homered to lead off the bottom of the 1st inning to get the Padres on the board 1st. Tatis, who has batted leadoff in the 1st two games, homered to left-center on Braves’ Starter Reynaldo López's first pitch. It was Tatis’ 12th career leadoff homer.

Martin Maldonado’s RBI single in the 2nd inning gave the Padres a 2-0 lead, but Marcell Ozuna hit a 2-out, 2-run single in the 3rd to tie it for the Braves.

San Diego’s Xander Bogaerts hit a 2-out RBI double in the 3rd, and Jarred Kelenic tied it at 3 apiece with his leadoff HR to right field.

Jason Adam (1-0) struck out the side in the 8th inning to earn the win. Closer Robert Suarez pitched a perfect 9th for his 2nd save in as many days to start the season. Suarez was hit on the lower leg by Drake Baldwin’s liner leading off the inning but remained the game. (109.6 exit velo)

The Padres bullpen was lights out again tonight, with 4 relievers combining on a 1-hit shutout over 4 2/3 innings. In 2 games, the Padres’ relievers have pitched 12 innings, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 13 and walking just 4.

Starter Dylan Cease pitched pretty well for the Padres, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits in 4 1/3 innings, striking out 7 and walking just 2.

Jackson Merrill- runner-up for the 2024 NL Rookie of the Year award, had his 15th career 3-hit game. Merrill- who drove in 4 runs in a 7-4 win yesterday- scored on Bogaerts’ double in the 3rd.
