Death ought not to be a happy thing, but then, marriage ought not to be a prison.
Seven years ago, Lady Lydia Whiting married for the good of her parents, and widowhood was supposed to mark the beginning of her freedom. But when her husband spurns her from beyond the grave and cuts her from his will, her parents are determined to force her into another wretched marriage of convenience.
Fleeing is the only option.
Robert Bradshaw has a good, quiet life. Work and his daughter are all he needs, even if others think he ought to remarry. Why should he? His beloved wife was an angel among men, and no other could compare—especially a young widow who is more mouse than woman.
But with Lydia’s parents determined to get her back under their thumb, Robert may be her only salvation.

This author writes about love. Her focus is usually not on desire and attraction but about the thing that draws people to give themselves wholly and devotedly to another forsaking all others and what would keep that between them for the rest of their lives. I have read over 7 of her books and it has been a running theme unwaveringly and I just love that for all her readers!!
Though other authors do write swoony stories of courtship with sweet moments between the mains that make you smile, this lady writes about the substance that makes you fully believe in love and devotion! Augh!! So if you are ever looking to experience that in your book choices, she has over 20 titles out in the world. And this to me is her best one yet!!!!
Robert and Lydia were a pair I worried about in the beginning. I didn't know how gentleness could develop between them given their very very shaky first encounters. But miss Nichols held my hand gently and said "come, I'll show you how". My, it is a beautifully penned slow burn!! Sigh... You can literally feel things slowly change between them in such warm increments and it just tugs at your heart strings!!! I loved how tender this book truly was.
Aside from a magnificently written story of romantic love, this book also teaches the reader about prejudice and perception tenderly. I really like how the author makes you see the importance of how to deal with these things without battering and bombarding the reader. I was sat and learnt and I walked away smiling 🤗.
A very romantic, very healing, warming story. Thoroughly recommended.
