The horrors of war

It is beyond me why war is appealing to anyone. Only to those who don’t actually participate. Its effects are so far reaching. So many innocents die.

Informative, well written, great narrator

Outstanding!!!! So good I was hoping it would not end, great mix of the overall campaign and individual soldiers. Can not recommend enough.

Good read, focus on people. Maps would be nice

This is a good read, well researched. The focus is not so much on geopolitics but on the people who willing or unwilling participated in this campaign. Lots of harrowing stories and some of hope. What is really missing is a PDF with a map of the campaign.

Horrifically detailed. Reminds us why war should be avoided if at all possible

Couldn’t stop listening to this. I had to listen to it three times to be sure I had some of the more interesting stuff memorized.

This book is a very well thought out, researched, and written. Dark subject matter, but a purist’s history book.

A fast-paced historical drama

There’s no catching your breath for this read. Well written, deeply engaging story of a magnificent tragedy.

Extreme inhumanity

A history story with great accuracy. Many parts of the story are from letters and archival data. The tragic losses to humans and animals was so severe at times I thought I would have to stop reading.

Good Historical Narrative

Good, not great historical narrative reminiscent of Beevor’s Stalingrad book. Harder to relate to an older century but strong enough narrative and soldiers’ details to get through slower backstory. It was a good primer for Napoleonic times.

Detailed narrative of the campaign, its causes, the personalities, the motives and the memories making up the totality of thisassive undertaking and even greater tragedy. highly recommend for anyone interested in History.
