Vintage Alaska Commercials with Historian David Reamer | Zoom Room #37

  • Summary

  • In this episode we’re looking back on an aspect of Alaska’s history that isn’t often revisited, but lives on in the hearts of many who grew up here: TV commercials.

David Reamer normally spends his time writing a weekly column in the Anchorage Daily News about the history of Alaska. He also co-authored the book “Black Lives in Alaska: A History of African-Americans in the Far Northwest.”

But recently, he’s been spending his free time finding and compiling old, local commercials from across the state. He posts them on his social media accounts and his YouTube channel.

The collection he’s put together feature ads dating back to the 70’s and include everything from beer commercials, car dealerships, politicians, and Alaska’s many local celebrities.

ATMI producer Madison Knutson spoke with Reamer about these artifacts, what they tell us about the history of Alaska, and how the state has been perceived by the lower 48.

    Hosted by Roey McCowan.

    Music by Kendrick Whiteman.

Alaska Teen Media Institute is based in Anchorage, Alaska. We would like to acknowledge the Dena’ina people, whose land we work on.
