A bio-engineered dog fights for its life and its right to life. From the Arthur C. Clark Award-winning author of CHILDREN OF TIME.

My name is Rex. I am a good dog.

Rex is also seven foot tall at the shoulder, bulletproof, bristling with heavy calibre weaponry and his voice resonates with subsonics especially designed to instil fear. With Dragon, Honey and Bees, he's part of a Multiform Assault Pack operating in the lawless anarchy of Campeche, Mexico. A genetically engineered Bioform, he's a deadly weapon in a dirty war. All he wants to be is a Good Dog. And to do that he must do exactly what Master says and Master says he's got to kill a lot of enemies.

But who, exactly, are the enemies? What happens when Master is tried as a war criminal? What rights does the Geneva Convention grant weapons? Do Rex and his fellow Bioforms even have a right to exist?

And what happens when Rex slips his leash?

This was not the brain-candy read/listen I first took it be.
I lost count of how many existential topics, epiphanies and quandaries this book dredged up so subtly. It was like being filleted alive without noticing. I can’t even look at my dog right now… and that is the least of it.

I LOVED this book!! The cast was great, characters well developed & realistic while keeping such an unusual story believable. I’m excited to read the next book in the series!

Imaginative & thought provoking

I was laughing at first with the opening narration of a war dogs mind. Then I realized it was because I’m so used to media not taking itself seriously that I forgot I could take a silly concept seriously. As the book went on, I found it far less silly and let myself get swallowed up by another of my favorite authors stories. I nearly cried by the end. Rex is a good dog.

I started listening to this because I thought it was a funny concept.

I've never been a dog person, probably from delivering newspapers for eight years and being nipped at constantly. Imagine my surprise, then, when an ungainly, 7+ foot killing machine in the form of a dog captured my heart in this story. I love how the story unfolds without ever telling you too much up front. The narration is extremely good, with Rex's narrator at the top of the heap. Filled with moral conundrums and questions for science and religion at its fringes, mostly Dogs of War is simply excellent storytelling. After being a little disappointed with the third book in Tchaikovsky's Children of Time series, I was in no hurry to get into this one. I'm so glad I did.

An engaging surprise
