Publisher's summary

Upon returning to Valia after his journey to Caelford and the Unclaimed Lands, Corin Cadence is confronted with a familiar foe—his own father.

While his strength has vastly increased since his last encounter with Magnus Cadence, Corin knows that he’ll need every trick at his disposal—and maybe a few new ones—if he wants to survive a duel with his father intact.

While Corin struggles with his family, his friends must face a second year at Lorian Heights with new classes, familiar but new chancellor, and deadly new enemies both on and off the campus. But school itself is the least of their worries. As the year progresses, the nation of Valia faces new travails at the emergence of a mysterious faction targeting attuned commoners and foreigners.

Casualties mount as Corin’s allies seek to unmask the leadership of this deadly order—and discover a threat that they cannot hope to face and emerge unscathed.

The Silence of Unworthy Gods is the fourth book in the Arcane Ascension series, a progression fantasy epic that mixes dungeon crawling and magical school content. This book also references events from the Weapons & Wielders series up to Book three, a connected series that takes place several years earlier with some overlapping cast members.

I look forward to more books in the series but...

I'm a fan of this series (and it's expanded universe)and enjoy the world but it seems like the series is getting too grand in scope for its own good. The emotional pay off for a plot that's been building sense book 1 is kinda glossed over and a nebulous treat ends up alternating the main group in ways that are left ambiguous as a kind of odd Cliff hanger. the time it takes do an action is also very inconsistent.

Well worth the wait!

Gosh, what a book! I’ve been waiting for this installment for a while and am genuinely considering a re-listen now having just finished it. Wonderful narrator for the audio book, tense scenes, feelings, moments of wanting to jump up and shout in triumph, and all tightly constructed without feeling compressed. What an absolute joy. :)

Never a dull moment

The only negative aspect i have for this story, is that it had to end eventually

Best of the series so far

Best of the series so far. Nick Podehl’s performance is killer. Rowe’s clearly been influenced by recent events heavily and has made an excellent work reflecting those values.

when's the next one?

honestly cannot get enough of this series. most "world building" books focus on history and politics and blah blah blah but the in depth magic system is so much fun to learn about along side the main characters.

very bingable! & some unfair criticism

I'll start by saying I've been loving this series and already can't wait for the next installment, the politics lean left and were a tad preachy once or twice for like, a line or two, but a lot of the criticism it's getting for its politics really isn't fair.

it's like those reviews on the first book complaining about corrin being gay or whatever, if you've listened to the series this far you pretty much know what to expect, the book is lgbt freindly and anti racist. if that's a problem, feel free to read a different book.

Heart-Racing and Relevant

This is my favorite book in the Ascension series so far! It’s rare that heroes in magical-school stories are as deep or flawed as real people, but the characters Rowe creates feel like they’re stepping off the page. Despite the fantastical setting, the characters face some of the same challenges and realizations as people in our society, like acknowledging biases and recognizing their own self-worth. It’s a wonderfully written story with epic fantasy battles, deeply moving emotions, and nail-biting danger. I can’t wait to see how these characters will continue to change their world!
