Publisher's summary

An apocalypse. An epic change in biology. Humanity’s new powers. No instructions. So, everyone created their own!

Born over a century after "The Rise", Jeff scavenges with his tyrannical mother for survival. Banned from cultivating freely, Jeff wants none of this life; his one objective is to join the immortal rankers as they attempt to climb the Northern Tower. On the day of his escape, a powerful guild attacks Leah’s group, and Jeff is thrown through a unique dungeon portal—a portal that hasn’t been used in nearly a hundred years.

In the pursuit of Jeff’s ultimate goal, he must choose whether to follow the Church, join a guild, or try it all on his own. Predators don’t only come from dungeons, and he must dig through mountains of misinformation for one straight answer.

When spells and skills unleash chaos, a special blue screen powers up, and Jeff’s journey to the peak or the grave begins.

One of my favorite audiobooks.

I am updating my review. This is one of my favorites and this is my fourth reread. I have purchased both the ebook and audiobook and am awaiting the sequels. Please get on that Ryan.

grand

in the beginning it starts to lay a foundation that it stops briefly to start the main story. the main story starts slow and barely intertwining. then it takes off like a rocket leaving you begging for another chapter. can't wait for the next book. I do recommend.

Easter eggs

If you notice them you’ll notice them. Even one for Life Reset if you’ve listened to the story. Won’t be doing spoilers for this world and slow character build but it is a builder upper. Character is not OP at the moment and even at the end is not OP if this is something you would like may want to give it ago. Is it the best thing ever since butter on toast bread? Nah. But I look forward to second book.

It would also be good to note that this is a story about a kid. The kid is going through a lot of shit. Just like all kids the MC is very sheltered and ignorant of the world around him. We may pick up some of the red flags that the character will undoubtedly go through and will have no way to deal with such circumstances but he tries and learns from it.

Excellent

I've really enjoyed Ryan Debruyn's work so I was excited for a new series from him and I certainly wasn't disappointed, My only complaint is that now I have three series from him that I am eagerly waiting on the next book for and he's only one person so he can't write them all at the same time!

Great Listen, waiting for book two.

The book is a good listen and the narrator does a great job of keeping the listener engaged. Just imagine a coming of age tale plus cultivation plus power hungry church as the main character tries to grow stronger. Give it a listen, nothing from Ryan has disappointed me so far.

Great

Enjoyed it. Good performance, storyline, some humor, betrayal, revenge. Everything needed for a good book is there.

5 stars for potential

This book has massive potential. The MC is so frustrating though. I’m just going to be honest. He sucks. That’s the best way to put it. Sorry this review has spoilers. He tries to come up with witty lies to keep his secrets and fails a lot. He gets picked on a lot but shows his anger at weird times. He thinks slowly at times and he is terrible with people. There is more I can say, but let’s get with the good.
The potential. The ranking and all of that is standard. He did luck out with the training room. He does have to work hard for his gains. He did save a damsel. He is different. Lol.
I just hope he has better outcomes in the next book

Balanced

This book is fairly well balanced between action and interaction, conversation and inner dialogue.
fair bit of drama
lots of action
lots of adventure
fair bit of description
little romance, although it has potential for moderate romance later
I enjoyed it and I would recommend it.
