Publisher's summary

The New Comedy Bible is a step-by-step, no excuses manual for writing, performing, and launching your career as a stand-up comic. Written by Judy Carter, the author of The Comedy Bible (2001), which was called by The Washington Post and Forbes as a “Comedy Essential”. This new book, penned in classic Carter’s style - part career coach and part comedy dominatrix - has 100 percent new content where you will:

  • Partake in 48 new exercises to turn your problems into punchlines.
  • Create 60 minutes of new material.
  • Discover your authentic comedy persona.
  • Conquer stage fright and slay hecklers.
  • Push part procrastination and get booked.

Whether you’re a beginner just starting out or a pro looking to create new material for your next Netflix Comedy Special, Carter’s proven methods are legendary among today’s top performers. Alumni of her workshops include: Seth Rogan, Hannah Gadsby, Sherri Sheppard, and Maz Jobrani, among others. As Lily Tomlin says, "Judy Carter helps others find their authentic persona and communicate in a way that makes audiences laugh." Interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, she said, “Judy Carter can show you how to make your sense of humor pay off.”

The exercises in this book will get you off the couch and onto the stage, helping you develop the skills necessary to envision, and achieve, a successful career in comedy.

BEST book for stand up comedians

I’ve been doing standup for about 12 years and I’ve taken multiple training courses, I recently read Judy’s book and I have to tell you, this is the best, most comprehensive book I’ve ever come across. I referred her book to many comedians and the feedback that I received is the same, thank you so much Judy for writing this book, I do hope to meet you someday.

Broad strokes and finite details

This book has everything and gave tons of practical and useful info, while still being entertaining. I will likely read it again to do the exercises, but even just listening while driving I learned so much. Thanks Judy!

Very relevant

She offers all kinds of advice in a simple and easy to follow way. One of the best audiobooks out there. I only wish she would include a copy of the workbook but whatever

Essential reading for all stand-up comics

Loved this! I've been a stand-up comic for 5+ years. I'm also a speaker and storyteller. I wish I read this 5 years ago. I'm inspired to breathe new life into my act. Thank you so much.

Can you put the end at the beginning?

I just started doing open mics in Lubbock Texas. I really enjoyed this book. There are parts where it was hard to connect with the author, but the at end when she shared some personal stories and experiences she had with her students I couldn't help but feel like I understood her a little bit better. I think the way the book ended on that note made me want to reread everything under the new lens that I have for the author. I think my only feedback would be to get me emotionally tied into your story at the beginning of all of this a little bit more. At times it felt very text booky, but that's also kind of the point. I liked the performance, felt authentic, wasn't the typical perfected voice over that you usually hear on an audible book.

Thank you for putting this together. I know it will help me reach my goals.

A little political, the rest is great

This is great. Good, Loved it. Will listen to it 3 more times as I actually work through it.
BUT, I don't know why she wastes energy on venting on the former president.
Would have liked advice on how to transition out of the pattern to sound more original once you know the rules, Everyone can't sound the same on stage.
But I have read the real book and liked it, and I recommend this AUDIBLE, way better, her expressions and notes are great.
I like her cat and dog joke, not sure all is hack?
I read and listened and now its time to do. :) Thanks. Would recommend, with the warning that political jabs are old.
Oh, and this book has a Facebook page, is great for finding a comedy buddy!

Fantastic Book

great from start to finish. My favorite part is the author mispronouncing every comic's name. genuinely great joke writing advice found inside.
