Publisher's summary

Caleb has spent the last six months adjusting to life possessed by the vampire spirit Gray and hunting demons with their boyfriend, federal exorcist John Starkweather.

Unfortunately, the other agents of SPECTR view Caleb and Gray as a ticking time bomb. Their frustration mounts as the new district chief puts more and more restrictions on them. John wants to help, but he has problems of his own. Charleston is in the grip of an outbreak of demon possession, and the human members of SPECTR have been pushed to the brink.

But Caleb and Gray have a new ally: the drakul Drugoy and his host, Yuri Azarov. Yuri and Dru live by no mortal’s rules, and they can show Caleb and Gray how to do the same...depending on how far they’re willing to go.

Because ultimately, Caleb and Gray must decide where they belong: with the only other living drakul, or at the side of the man they love.

SPECTR: The Complete Second Series contains:

Fantastic storytelling, frustrating narration

I want to emphasize that I enjoyed this story immensely, especially the last book & a half of the series within this volume, which contained near constant suspense. I wanted to know how it would all end faster, but then as the ending approached, i didn't want it to end, because well, then it would be over. (I know there's a 3rd series in process, but still). I loved the new side characters introduced, at least the "good guys," and absolutely hated the bad guys, as one should.

So far as the narration...meh. The voices are pretty well differentiated, but not consistent. As in, Gray's voice changes over time, becomes even slower & deeper, and sometimes Caleb appears to have a bit of a southern accent, but other times, he does not. A side character, who is Muslim, begins without an accent, with it specifically mentioned how she has lived in the US all her life, and then in the next book within the volume, she suddenly has a totally different accent. The same occurred with another character, who suddenly had an accent he didn't before. The voice of the old district chief was different in this volume than in the first volume. I binge-listened to The Complete First Series as a re-listen, followed immediately by a binge of this Complete Second Series, so these inconsistencies might have been more obvious to me than to someone taking them at a slower & more intermittent pace though.

Over all, I would DEFINITELY recommend the book itself - it is excellent - but if I'd owned the print and had more time to focus on print, I would've switched to that route. Since audio narration comes down so much to personal taste, this is just for my own personal feelings.

Monster mayhem and characters with heart

No one does monster mayhem better than Jordan Hawk. But there is much more to her stories. They have heart, soul, and characters that pull you in. Loved it. The narration is just okay, confusing voice distinctions making character identification difficult too many times.

A bit of a disappointment

The story was just as great as the first series but the narrator was a let down. He did such a great reading of the first series and I was really excited to see he was reading the second as well but his voices were not only different from the first series they were inconsistent throughout this series. Also he was reading Grey’s voice so painfully slowly it made him seem slow mentally as well. In the first series it was so much better with almost perfect timing that at times was epic.
Overall I loved the series but for this one, only for the great writing and not the narration

Pure Gray goodness

As always Hawk hit it out of the park with the newest SPECTR series. I've had this since it came out but only recently finished it. Have to say Hawk really beat the crap out of Gray and Caleb this season. I mean - OUCH. It was good for him to come across beings stronger t Han him. But oh. Pour drakul. And.I definitely could have had a lot less Barillo, who I really hope gets his just desserts at some point. I'm rather sad about what happened in the final book - it gives Caleb and Gray a rather dark future if nobody lives as long as they will. I'm sure Hawk will figure out a fix for that. At least I hope so ;)

I enjoy Langer's voices for John, Caleb, and Gray - especially Gray and he did a good job with the others. But whereas in the first series he was continually spot on, there were a few issues with this series. I don't remember exactly which books but sometimes the voice would change, or the obvious editing was a problem. But not enough to be a huge problem.

After all, everything Gray is good, even if it isn't perfect. Here's to more Gray, Caleb, and John coming up...

Entertaining series

Author has created an interesting and entertaining world. Characters engage sympathy and empathy.
One serious negative. Brad Langer, narrator, changed the voice of Caleb/Gray to a slow cadence, making Gray much less intelligent, a more reptilian brain powered entity. Sad about that.

What happened to the narration?

Great book, very angsty (had to take a break at one point to take a breather) but would have been a much more enjoyable listening experience if the narrator didn't make Grey sound slow and stupid. It really detracts from the story and is particularly grating in fast action scenes.
