Publisher's summary

There is a difference between exercise and training. Exercise is physical activity for its own sake, a workout done for the effect it produces today, during the workout or right after you're through. Training is physical activity done with a longer-term goal in mind, the constituent workouts of which are specifically designed to produce that goal. Training is how athletes prepare to win, and how all motivated people approach physical preparation.

Practical Programming for Strength Training - 3rd Edition addresses the topic of training. It details the mechanics of the process, from the basic physiology of adaptation to the specific programs that apply these principles to novice, intermediate, and advanced lifters.

  • Each section completely updated
  • Better explanations of the proven programs that have been helping hundreds of thousands of lifters get stronger more efficiently
  • Expanded novice section with the details of 3 different approaches to the problem of getting stuck and special approaches for the underweight and overweight trainee
  • Expanded intermediate section with 18 separate programs and 11 detailed examples
  • Expanded advanced section with detailed examples of 9 different programs
  • Expanded special populations section with example programs for women and masters lifters training through their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s
  • Day-to-day, workout-to-workout, week-by-week detailed programs for every level of training advancement

The most comprehensive audiobook on the theory and practice of programming for strength training.

Actionable Advice. All else is a waste of time.

A friend of mine and I started barbell training at the same time. Nearly identical starting height / weight / body type / build. I went the Starting Strength / PPST route, and he went with some overly complex nonsense. Both of us lift M/W/F. 2 years later, I'm squatting / deadlifting 5 plates on an intermediate program (Texas Method from PPST), and considering competing... and he's still not squatting / deadlifting 3 plates. Needless to say, he finally bought Starting Strength and is finally reading it. Don't waste your time with other programs. Mark knows what works, why it works, and after reading you will too. Not to mention, listening to Mark actually read the Audio book and ripping weesh academics a new one in his sarcastic tone is hilariously awesome.

Very informative, can be overwhelming

It was very informative. Very good takeaway principles. A lot of references to graphs and things in the hardcover book which you don’t have access to but the principle and information are still applicable.

Great info, no supplemental pdf.

This book is foundational for program design. They do a great job working through exercise selection, rep/set schemes, weekly planning, rest, and more for the Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced lifter - as well as older lifters, younger, and post rehab.
The book is primarily text, especially the early chapters discussing the physiological background behind the recommendations they will later give for novice, intermediate,... because of this I am glad to have had the audio book. As the book progresses, several graphs or charts are referenced that the audiobook listener does not have access to and the author reading through a weekly schedule is cumbersome. this is my first audiobook with images referenced that does not provide the images!
I purchased the hard copy as well, probably the exact goal of editors and authors. I do believe providing ALL images and weekly schedules would be practical but I would have liked a PDF with the graphs that were referenced and that would have been easy for the audio producer.
All that said I am happy to have the audio version of this book - having it without any supplement is better than. not having it available!

A must-read for anyone with a body

This book should be required reading for students taking Physical Education classes in high school, or at the very least college.

Such incredible insights and knowledge. I began applying the training as soon as I could and have seen tremendous results.

Now my brother and a friend are both following the program and seeing incredible results as well. And my brother, who went to school for exercise science is even impressed with the results.

Read this and apply it!

Quality info

I’ve always sought the best guidance I can in search of maximizing strength. While listening to Mike Matthews Bigger leaner Stronger a topic arose where he said he deferred to authority and cited Mark. I just had to research this guy and I was not disappointed. My next audio books would be Mark’s other books as he gives precise insight into strength training which others are usually short on in being definitive.
Quality book for anyone needing to put a strength training program in place with the do’s and dont’s and the best exercises to maximize strength and or hypertrophy.
Keep up the good work!

Listen and Learn

"I caught the most excellent pump today my man." - Mark Rippetoe

Great book on lifting with great examples of programming for the novice, intermediate, and advanced athlete. All of this combined with that classic and gruff Rippetoe charm.

The only draw back is the missing element Mr. Rippetoe mentions a handful of times. Visual elements to the book.
