The female Nero Wolfe!
The first outing of Amelia Winslow Brewster ("Amy" to her friends), the elephantine, cigar-smoking, blue-blooded genius of a detective, finds her in a battle of wits with an unknown killer who has neatly framed her nephew. You'll howl with delight as the icon-toppling Amy tackles stuffed-shirts, law enforcement, gargantuan gourmet meals, and crime with equal aplomb. Another rollicking Amy Brewster classic from the glory days of the 1940s.

Amy Brewster at her best

Amy Brewster is a large, foul-tempered woman with a cigar and gin habit, but she is one of the most brilliant characters I have encountered in a book. Sharp tongued and even sharper witted, nothing gets past this behemoth of a woman.
Chris Horton is a mild-mannered banker, always doing what is right. When he finds out that he isn't going to die from a heart condition, he starts realizing that life has been passing him by while he waited to die. Little does he know that his life is about to be turned upside down when he buys a pair of rare paperweights for his fiancée, Julie.
This story is full of twists, a little bit of history, a deranged grandmother who only speaks French, a couple of conniving "friends", and Chris' encounter with a truly pure soul in Rhoda Dumont. There is plenty of humor, some close encounters with foul play, and loads of detecting in this book and it is a true enjoyment all around.
The narrator, Janelle Bigham, does a fantastic job and really adds a lot to the enjoyment of the book.
I was given the opportunity to listen to this book by the publisher and I chose to review it.
