Publisher's summary

Bandits. Forest fires. Cannibals. Material shortages. Family problems.

Why had Clayton Sanders expected these issues and others like them to be absent from life at the end of the modern world? It had sounded good anyway. His plan had been simple: dig in, hunker down, and wait it out. He knew that society would go through a "reset" period before things settled down. He knew people would suffer during that time, but also knew he couldn't stop it. He couldn't help the world around him but he could try and keep his family and closest friends safe. Maintain at least a semblance of normalcy for them.

And then his family had gotten involved.

First it was his parents insisting that they show everyone the Sanders had working vehicles and extra food by taking supplies to the church in Jordan to "donate." This had resulted in a fight for that same vehicle and a near battle just to get away.

Then his niece had gone charging into Peabody to "rescue" her friend, only to be caught herself and necessitate a rescue mission for her that he still partially regretted as it had cost the life of his best friend “Big Bear” John Barnes. Then Leon, Clay's irascible grandfather, decided they needed to build a town of sorts and gather good people with skills they needed to occupy it. Now, the people Leon brought are beginning to want to do things differently, his parents have yet to learn their lesson about letting other people know that the Sanders were better prepared than average for the disaster that had beset the Earth, and on top of everything else who shows up? Tax collectors.

Maybe things haven't changed so much after all. Now he has to defend his family farm from an old enemy of his father and prevent him and his army of miscreants from taking the very things Clay and the others need to survive. All in a day's work here at the end of the modern world, right? With the dig-in-and-hunker-down plan now truly shot to hell, Clay and his friends are going to have to face some rough odds in defending their family and home. Fortunately, this isn't the first time they've faced such a thing. Their enemies don't have a clue what kind of firestorm they're about to ignite.

meanwhile back at the ranch people died

this book is okay. In some spots it's better than okay, but he's gotten better it would still be worth the money because it continues the series which I'm hooked on which says How could an author he is, but you need to be patient with this book. Very patient.

Great Entertainment

Hits all the right buttons for a great story. when you can emerse yourself in such a story and feel you are right there, feel the pathos of the moment, and know you are a part of the situation and circumstances, then the storyteller has done all you can ask. N.C. has done that here and I hope he continues to do that. Thank Mr Reed. Hooah!!

Recommendation - A Good Series to Listen or Read

I liked the Kindle and am always impatiently waiting for the Audible. Yes I purchase both as the Kindle comes out first :-) People who are interested in apocalypse CME/EMP disasters will enjoy reading and or listening to this series, which Book 1 hooks you from the start. As always, cannot wait for the next instalment :-)

Mispronunciations

This is one of my favorite series, the only one I have also listened to (in addition to reading it through several times). That being said, I think you should read this, not listen to it. While the narrator has a great voice, he doesn’t pronounce a lot of things correctly. I won’t even begin to tell you how frustrated I am that he doesn’t get the military words right. I know the author is aware and working to fix that going forward (such as the narrator saying M-R-A-P instead of Em-Rap). But, he gets many other words, and even names, wrong. At one point, I actually yelled at the speaker, “For f&@$$’s sake, it’s BYron, not Brian!!!”

Also, the narrator is terrible at accents, he shouldn’t even try. Especially when he reads a second generation American with Japanese ancestry as a sort-of-almost Hispanic accent. Tandi might have some sort of regional American accent, but not one that sounds as if he’s from a Spanish speaking country!

I will continue to listen, because I love these books, but I will also continue to hope that they get a better narrator!

Fire Fire Fire

What an awesome series. Just when things are looking up there's fire. Will they all survive? Well, I just finished book 8 and the story keeps building. This was a very important book and some of the characters you didn't like so much you might end up liking. So much is in this book and much more is on its way. All you need to know is it is worth a credit. I even bought extra credits to finish the series. Now I'm waiting on book 9. Also, check out the Parno series and Odd Billy Todd. All are awesome.

Should have been more compelling

It's very frustrating that Reed pads the "books" with so much filler. He should have left out the padding and made less volumes instead of fleecing the listeners.
