Earn No Matter What

What a SMART audiobook!

I honestly didn't know what to expect when I first got this audiobook- boy was I pleasantly surprised!

This is a very thorough and detailed audiobook. Even though I wasn't necessarily interested in EVERY job presented in the book, I nevertheless listened to all of them because the information was so interesting and well-presented. The author did a great job detailing the many things someone should consider before embarking on a particular job.

The author describes the skills and training needed for each job, the necessary equipment, the states that require a license, how much you'll earn and the way you'll be paid (cash, check, invoices, etc.), how to find customers/clients, and the down sides to each job.

This book gave me ideas for jobs that I've never considered, such as being a sign language translator/interpreter, a taxidermist, a well-digger, an underwater logger, a limo driver, an aquarium manager, a crime scene cleanup person and a worm harvester, to name a few.

The narrator had a pleasant voice, and he presented the material in a highly engaging manner.

How to be Your Own Boss

As with many of these types of books, they are giving advice on how to become your own boss, or entrepreneur. The book is really about how to get off the ground in a variety of self-promotional or self-paced careers that are not done from behind a desk. The book gives information on how this is done in each state and who to contact to get further information. It is not about resting on one's laurels but rather the work that would go into establishing oneself in a variety of careers.

The book gives quite a lot of ideas. I do feel that it's possible this information might be easier to take in in written form due to format and content of the book. The performance of the narrator is also less of a factor as this is not a dramatic book, even in the nonfiction sense where stories might be told. It is very informational. Overall, a good resource.

Good practical information

If you are thinking about starting your own business, this is a do not miss book. It has several realistic ideas about what you might be able to do, what you will need to get started, how much money you could make and some things you need to know. It is a well researched book with a good amount of information. Several interesting possibilities! Also, the narration is easy to listen to very well done. Interesting ideas for self employment

I had hoped to find my dream career even though I am a disabled woman facing retirement. But this good gave some general great ideas if you are looking at stepping out on your own and you have the ability to take the right steps from the beginning. Each job is broken down into what skills you need, what education you might need, tools you will need up front, licensing,how to find perspective clients and what kind of money you should expect to make as well as how and when you will get paid. Some gigs will pay cash or check at time of service, others you will invoice and wait for payments.

Quite educational, the narrator's voice kept me interested even when getting into the nitty-gritty of a job that sounded unappealing to me from the get go.

Great ideas to surviving the gig economy

Are you a millennial? Semi-retired? Looking for additional income or just looking for something different to do? Welcome to the gig economy and Jeff Everts’ book is well-placed in this new world. Although written in 2012, it is still very relevant. It came about after the crash of 2008 when the economy was shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs every month. Traditional jobs were disappearing, but people still needed a way to may income. Companies were hiring more contracts so they didn’t have to pay benefits and make pension contributions. Those who were the most creative and open to the possibilities were able to quickly adapt. Entrepreneurs crawled out of the woodwork, opened businesses, and began to find new and innovative ways to make money. Some for survival, some because losing the 9-to-5 job was the push they needed to do what they’ve always wanted to do. The incentive to take a risk.

Now, as workers have realized many of those traditional jobs are not going to return, people are turning to the gig economy. Now, I’m practical and I’ve had some health problems. I’m Canadian, so most of my healthcare is covered, but having insurance and a pension plan are important. If you are more flexible, able to pay premiums, or are covered by someone else’s insurance or are just comfortable without benefits (also those who need flexibility and/or are just desperate).

For all those people, this is a book to get you started with lots of gigs and careers you might never have considered. Mr. Everts has done much of the research for you: licensing, who the job might suit, what training is involved and why you might want to consider this particular job. Have you ever considered taxidermy, underwater logging, well driller, limo drivers, large aquarium maintainer, or electrician? How about scavenging whale excrement, being an ASL interpreter or an exterminator?

No?

Then this is the book for you. Whether you need to learn how to hunt truffles, what roadkill is good for, what tools a plumber needs or why practice makes perfect for picking locks, this is a great reference book.

Okay, so those are just a few of the 35 jobs/gigs/occupations/vocations mentioned. I want to highlight one – Crime Scene Clean-up person. Yes, this is such a thing. Yes, this takes an iron stomach and a strong constitution. Being able to work with the police is necessary and you also need to remember you are seeing people on one of the worst days of their lives. You are trying to make a place habitable again. Being available at all hours makes you more likely to get work. Building relationships with dispatchers, police officers, and other who can recommend you and your services is critical. Having plenty of supplies on hand is important.

Oh, and using the family minivan is probably not a good idea.

Not your thing? There are always dogs to be walked or painting to be done. This is a concise book with lots of practical information without being boring. I believe the narrator, Luke Rounda, went a long way to making it an enjoyable listen. He was invested in the material and I felt I was hearing the voice of the writer – a true sign of the perfect marriage between author and narrator.

Honestly, if you’re looking for something different, this is a great book. Even if one of those 35 work ideas doesn’t suit, there is practical advice on how to do further research until you find what you’re looking for.

Final note – although this book is written for an American audience, most of the jobs exist in many countries and although regulations and educational requirements might vary, this book is a great starting point.

This book is a great source of information. Jeff Evarts has done the research and has provided information on 35 possible job options that you can look into. Information includes background or skills needed, certifications, expenses and potential income. It is not the complete package for each job, but it certainly is a great starting point.

Luke Rounda did a great job with the narration. Very clear and easy to listen to.

Solid primer for potential entrepreneurs

This was a great primer on a variety of business that someone interested in starting their own business might want to consider. The author/narrator does a good job of talking through many of the things someone should consider. I can't speak to the accuracy of the information, but that sort of thing should be pretty easy to research if you are truly interested in one of these businesses. If you are truly serious about starting your own business, it can't hurt to check this book out and give yourself a place to start.
