Publisher's summary

This biography of a seminal civil rights leader draws on personal interviews from Myrlie Evers-Williams (Evers's widow), his two remaining siblings, friends, grade-school-to-college schoolmates, and fellow activists to elucidate Evers as an individual, leader, husband, brother, and father. Extensive archival work in the Evers Papers, the NAACP Papers, oral history collections, FBI files, Citizen Council collections, and the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission Papers, to list a few, provides a detailed account of Evers's NAACP work and a clearer understanding of the racist environment that ultimately led to his murder.

The book is published by The University of Arkansas Press.

Critic reviews

"The first substantial scholarly biography of Medgar Evers.... Will be the standard reference for some time to come." ( Journal of Southern History)
"Williams's work tops what have been too few head-on examinations of the substance and significance of this martyr's sacrifice...." ( Library Journal)

Incredible Narration

I don't review much on Audible or anywhere really, but i had to take the time to acknowledge the quality of this book. Not only is the tale of Medger Evers (one of my personal favorite civil rights leaders) expertly told, but the narrator had me completely engrossed from the first word. He adds just the right amount of...something, that just draws you in. Seriously good. This is an absolute MUST DOWNLOAD.

Awesome! Great Great Book!!

I listened to this narrator do the story of Emmet Till and got an email recommending this one too. I’m so glad I didn’t just bin the email like I usually do. This is another outstanding performance telling an important story that made me think of how far things have come. Great book!

Good Book

I'm about halfway through but the story is told well and the guy talking makes it interesting. Check it out if you like civil rights history. I think I'll check out the other books this guy narrated too.

Good book

I learned so much more than I originally knew about Medgar Evers. I enjoyed the book. He belongs right up there with Malcolm X and MLK Jr.

Brilliant!

Amazing work. Inspired reading of a martyr. Thoroughly enjoyed listening about an authentic man who represents an era that many have chose to forget.
