Publisher's summary

The sirens of Griffins Bay are in trouble, and the recent slew of royal suicides looks to be the least of their worries.

For one, unless a blood relative of the queen shows up, no one's around to staff the monarchy. Well, except for a whack-job bureaucrat and he seriously won't do. Worse is the community unrest threatening siren society, a problem caused by too many humans in the pool, which means Simon and his off-limit girlfriend will have to run and hide if they want to make more of their flirtation....

The solution doesn't inspire confidence at first, but the Blakes have everything at hand to set their world to rights - namely, a hidden queen, a dead prince, and a facility for human manipulation. Once they find their sea legs, they'll restore order, distribute smart phones, and drive that conniving bureaucrat to a grisly, satisfying end.

Love this series!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, there's so much going on and I wanted to know the answers.

Any additional comments?

I love the world building and the characters in this series. Definitely recommend listening in order, this book picks up from and ties in heavily to the first and won't make as much sense otherwise. Amazing narrator, he really brings emotion to the characters. I received a free review copy of this audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.

Great Addition to the Mer Chronicles

I enjoyed the first book in this series but this one is even better! I enjoyed the pace in this book and how everything progresses. There are a few unexpected twists that make the story fun and unpredictable.

Narration brought the story to life. Sean did a great job with this audiobook.

I love fantasy and the Mer Chronicles are a fun world with mermaids/sirens and their unique way of bonding and selecting a mate. I'd recommend everyone to read the first book before reading/listening to this second one. Everything will make a lot more sense if you understand the special world this author has introduced in book 1.

There is also a little bit from book 3 introduced at the end and I do have to say I'm totally hooked and can hardly wait to see what is going on there! I'm so looking forward to book 3!!!

more adventure mystery suspense mer/siren humans

Twist-n-turns, not fillers necessary . . . caution read/listen book one first. In book one you get a lot of the background of both the world and the various characters that surround Kate and the Blake family as a whole. Now the story takes on an extra level of mystery, suspense, adventure, romance, fantasy, myths. From forbidden to friends to lovers to running for more than just today. In the second installment in the Mer Chronicles I still get all that I loved about he first book. Small-towns, mermaids/sirens, romance, suspense, and more.

You get some serious changes going on in the mer/human world. We have more characters old and new. We have a deeper plot. We have more going on. We have an extra layer of all the above and more. I can say no more than to make sure you read/listen to book one first. The writing is great. The narrator does a very good job bringing to life the hard work of the author.

Side Plots need more meat

This book focuses on Carmen and her attempts to get back her throne from Duncan. There is a lot of excitement around this as he doesn’t want to give it back and takes steps to keep it, such as brainwashing humans to help get rid of her and even has a plot to kill her. It backfires and he gets his just desserts in the end. So there is a great HEA! This is the part of the book I liked most, but there are two side stories that I believe were not fleshed out as well as could be or they should be relegated to a novella/separate book. They are the kidnapping of Sylvia and Maya marrying someone really bad for her. I definitely would love to read more on it, but there wasn’t much in this story so it kinda dragged the rest of it down. I’d give the book a 4/5 stars!

The narration was good. Sean does a great job with the characters and creating different voices for them. My nitpick would be that he sounded really excited and energetic throughout most of the book. Which felt off, since that wasn’t supposed to be the overall tone. I wish he had read more regular speaking level. I give the audio a 4/5 stars.

I'm Hooked!

Any additional comments?

Breakwater: The Mer Chronicles is Book 2 in The Mer Chronicles Series. I think that it is best enjoyed after listening to Book 1 for more background on the story and characters. I was pleasantly surprised that Breakwater was just as good as the first book in the series, something that doesn't always occur. Once again, I was transported to the magical world of sirens and had a great listening experience. Romance, suspense and a few surprises all made for an interesting story. Such a fun series! The narration was terrific and added to my enjoyment of the audiobook. I can't wait to see what happens next and I would recommend Breakwater: The Mer Chronicles.

Stunning 2nd Book in the series

I reviewed the first audio book in this series recently and now have the pleasure of reviewing Breakwater book two in The Mer Chronicles series.

Following on from the Updrift, the first book in the series, which was a wonderful romance and incredibly written and narrated story also introduced us to the Mer folk / Sirens and their magical world in the sea that exists alongside the human world.

With that knowledge already provided by Updrift,  Breakwater has the freedom to be more expansive and whilst there is still  love and romance in this book, it is also a really gritty adventure that takes us on a journey far and wide.

There are so many surprises throughout this book and they are surprises that have repercussions affecting both humans and Mer-people.

Errin's writing and Sean's narration maintain the magical qualities of the series while telling a gripping story that has you on the edge of your seat in places. I just love the way that these two great talents work so well together.

Narrator, Sean Posvistak draws you into this book and manages to keep flow while telling the story from many different viewpoints. He transitions brilliantly between the various situations and monologues.

I highly anticipate the third book in this series Outrush. The teaser chapter at the end of this book already has me craving the opportunity to listen to it!

I'm not into fantasy books but.....

I was given this book upon request and I am volunteering this review. I have to admit, I do not care for a lot of fantasy titles . However, this book has captivated me and caught my interest ! Being the second book in the series, you really need to read the first one in order to catch the story. These are not standalone novels . But I instantly fell in love with this series! I fell in love with the characters immediately and am looking forward to continuing the journey with them! The book was performed wonderfully by the narrator , giving the characters life and individuality! I would recommend this title and a series to all of my friends who love fantasy novels!

Mermaids Livings With Humans is Fascinating!

Breakwater by Errin Stevens is an interesting mermaid story that takes place in present day. It is the second book in The Mer Chronicles, and I highly recommend reading the first book before this one to better enjoy the story (I didn’t listen to the first book, Updrift, and felt lost for about 1/3 of the book). The story primarily centers around Carmen who finds out that she is the heir to the Siren throne. Plotting against her is Duncan Fleming, who was appointed the Regent after the prior Queen died in the first book. Simply put, Duncan doesn’t want to relinquish his claim to the throne and devises a plan to expose the sirens by brainwashing humans who worship and adore him. In the end, Simon gets his just rewards is a classic fairytale ending (his attempt at killing the new Queen backfires on him). There is a side plot of Simon kidnapping Sylvia, while Maya marries the wrong man for the wrong reasons. I expect these side stories will be better developed in the next book.

I listened to the Audible version of this story narrated by Sean Posvistak who did an admirable job providing differing voices for all characters. I do wish he narrated in a more conversational tone though as his reading seemed quite excitable. All things considered, I would like to listen to the next book in the series and plan to listen to the first one as well as the concept of mermaids living among humans is fascinating.
