Publisher's summary

When 20-year-old Emma Brookstone arrives in the town of Bannack, Montana, she seeks out the local marshal, intending to enlist his help in uncovering the truth regarding her father's murder two years earlier. Upon meeting the marshal, however, she is shocked and dismayed to discover that he is none other than the man who gunned her father down that fateful night.

Though Clive Brookstone was an evil man who needed killing, the knowledge that he left a young woman orphaned tore at Nathan Haskin's conscience from the moment he pulled the trigger, and he has secretly provided for Emma's needs since that day. Certain that hearing about her father's legacy of lawless violence would break her heart, he concealed it from her, but now that she has returned to Bannack her persistence eventually prompts him to tell her the full story.

To make matters more complicated, Nathan finds his desire to protect Emma quickly growing into a powerful need to tame and possess her, and when her foolish behavior puts her safety at risk he doesn't hesitate to take her in hand and spank her soundly. His stern chastisement leaves her furious yet helplessly aroused, and it isn't long before he claims her hard and thoroughly.

In her heart, Emma knows what Nathan tells her is true - that her father's death was just - but writhing in ecstasy as she is utterly dominated by the man who killed him fills her with shame nonetheless, and she does her best to deny her lust for the handsome marshal. Will the day ever come when she can put aside the past and surrender herself fully to the man she once hated?

Publisher's Note: Emma's Surrender includes sexual scenes and spankings. If such material offends you, please don't buy this book.

Had potential, but missed the mark...

I think one of the problems I had was that this was such a short book. I find that in shorter novels, there just isnt any depth of story and things speed along at a really unrealistically rapid pace. The writing was seemingly novice, which was a surprise since I see she has several books.

The story is about Emma who witnesses her father get murdered. The man that did it sent her away to live in a safe place and took care of her financially though she didnt know that. She comes back a couple years later to find out what had happened, only to find that the killer is the respected sheriff. He isnt a bad man, but I did NOT like that whole "you must behave or I will punish you" thing he had going on. I'm not a particular fan of dominance role playing, but respect that some people do. In this story, however, it was less role playing, and more a jerk who wants control in all things, and a weak woman with daddy issues allowing herself to be controlled. The interactions often lead to sex (the words that were chosen for the sex scenes made me gag... "Cunny" for the female genitalia... really?") but the dominance in sex was secondary to his dominance in life. Abusive even. Some people may like that, just not my cup of tea.

The narrator is very VERY new I think. His reading was lilting and stilted, and seemed untrained. There is definitely potential though, he had some really wonderful qualities, I just think he needs some more training. I think this is more blamed on the editors and the director though. They should have recognized his inexperience and helped him to be more successful. I was gifted this book and said I would leave a review, I just wish I could leave a better one.

If that's what you like...

If you like guys that are jerks and abusive, this story is one you will enjoy.
My opinion is the male hero in the story is an ass. He was physically and emotionally abusive.
Just not my cup of tea.

Not Impressed

The voice acting was not something I liked. Throughout the story, I was constantly jarred by the narrator's phrasing, rhythm, and tone of voice. It appears that he is a new voice actor, so much of this can be attributed to being new. On the other hand, I would hope that the director and editors could have done a better job of giving direction and editing the piece.

The story itself left much to be desired. Originally, this book was presented as "Erotica" so I expected it to be much steamier than it was. Additionally, the use of certain vocabulary when describing the act of sex was cringeworthy. I felt no connection with either of the main characters and the relationship that bloomed between the two of them did not seem natural and instead rather forced. Speaking of force, some may be fans of dominance and submission - I think this rather bordered on abuse and was not in the least bit sexy to listen to.

Sadly, I did not care for this book

What would have made Emma's Surrender better?

If Nathan was more a dominant and less an abuser.

What could Amelia Smarts have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

For me, Nathan came across as an abusive jerk and not a sexy character at all. He killed her father, completely took away her free will and hurt her physically. There was nothing hot and steamy about that.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He was a little too over dramatic for me and female characters sounded more like stereotypical gay men. He was great for the male voices with his strong, manly voice.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Emma's Surrender?

I wouldn't have cut scenes but I would have altered them to be more sexy and less abusive and possessive. This didn't feel at all like dom/sub to me. It felt more like isolation/abuse

Hot spanking western suspense

This is the first time I've read Amelia Smarts it won't be the last. I enjoyed it very much but I could put it down. It was to short for everything that was happening, it seems abit rushed.
The narration was very good.

Mystery with a bit of spanking

This book had just the right amount of all ingredients to make a delicious dish. The mystery and suspense was a great change from my typical romances. There was not a lot of spanking/ erotica but it was just a perfect amount not to take away from the plot of the story.

The characters as portrayed by the narrator really had me on an emotional roller coaster. I love when a book captures me and sucks me in as if I was right there. I think the narrator did a wonderful job with all the characters attitudes, emotions and attractions.

I adored Emma. Such a strong woman who knew what she wanted and would stand up to anyone to get it.

I loved this book.... Great storyline and Spanking

Would you listen to Emma's Surrender again? Why?

I've listened to it several times because it has a sweetness that draws me back to it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nathan was my fav character because he has such a bold sense of justice and it such a HOT guy.

What does Jack Barclay bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Jack's performance has some questionable moments but also some very cowboyish down home soothing moments. He voices of the bad guys is pretty rough/unrealistic but his over all work throughout the book is quite good.
He definitely brings a welcome added dimension to the book that would be sorely lacking without him.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Many occasions of extreme reaction, when Clive is murdered, when Emma is kidnapped, when Nathan is beaten to a pulp, when Emma is beaten are all crying times. But between Nathan and Emma there are also some lovely laughter moments that break up the painful emotions.

Any additional comments?

This author is a real treat for any erotica readers who are into the DD type stories and/or the spanking relationships. Amelia Smarts is top notch!!!

Bad case of Stockholm Syndrome

Would you try another book from Amelia Smarts and/or Jack Barclay?

I will not listen to another book by Jack Barclay. His phrasing, voices and overall rhythm were off. The writing style is elementary and an easy read/ listen.

If you’ve listened to books by Amelia Smarts before, how does this one compare?

I have listened to Corralling Callie and I preferred this book over that one, though both were not something that I would necessarily seek out.

How could the performance have been better?

If a narrator does not have a command on his female voice impressions it is very difficult to buy into the story. Jack Barclay has a long way to go before I will listen to something else he narrates.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

There was too much going on with the story line. This is a case of Stockholm Syndrome gone bad. Add in that the lover is her father's killer and an emotional abuser.

great love story

I was gifted this audio ARC from the author for a honest and unbiased review
Amelia Smarts you have converted me to reading/listening to Erotic Western books
From the first page to the last I couldn't turn it off!
Jack Barclay did another great job with his narrating.
Emma and Nathan learn to appreciate each other as they each fill a void they're reluctant to admit they have.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves this type of book. If you're reading this review - go one-click this book right now. You won't regret it
