Awful Ending

there's the beginning of a story then an abrupt end completely out of left field as though the author just got bored of writing. They meet God and God says "yeah I did everything, bye"

Different direction from Forever War

Forever War was a sprawling political war epic in the tradition of Robert Heinlein. Forever Free is at once a smaller, personal story that, by the end, seems like a cosmic tale concocted by Aasimov, Clarke and Dick while sitting at a cafe with Serling in the Twilight Zone.

Love the author, great story, but not what you’d expect.

This is still a great book, but do not expect the same tone or tenor as the original. It does make sense considering it was written two decades after the first, but the names felt recycled for exposure. I feel it would have ultimately stood better on its own; as a new narrative. Still recommend a listen.

interesting, but undoes everything

After being surprised with how much I enjoyed "The Forever War," I was excited to continue following Mandella and Marygay's story. And while the story that the book tells is interesting in it's own right, I hate the way it totally undoes everything that was established in the first book.

"Forever Free" works better as an "alternative timeline" from the first book as opposed to a direct successor. While the big reveal was... interesting, the "cost" was too high with what it did to the established universe and the events of the first book.

Then, the narrator's style is so different from the first book that the characters didn't even feel like the same people. He also used this weird, "sneaky voice" for a lot of the dialogue that made it seem like there was some subtext where there wasn't any. It was very distracting.

This is an awful reading.

The book would be better with a decent narrator. I adjusted the audio as much as I could and it still sounded awful.
