Publisher's summary

Ivanhoe is the perfect novel for any listener who loves an action-packed adventure based on the mythology and legends of Medieval times in England. Set in the 12th century, Ivanhoe is the story of a young man who joins up with Richard the Lion Hearted during a dark time where England is split between the Normans and the Saxons, pitting friends and family against each other through the conquering of land and the changing seats of the Royal Family.

After Fighting in the Holy Crusades, Ivanhoe returns to reclaim his love, stolen from him by his own father who intends to marry her into Saxon Royalty as the descendant of a long dead king. King Richard, with little interest in ruling the Kingdom of England, has allowed his brother, the despicable Prince John, to rule in his absence, sending the land into dismal times. After his capture, Richard escapes Austria, where he travels in disguise awaiting a rising to overtake Prince John and reclaim the throne.

The novel is a riveting adventure of jousting knights, damsels in distress, burning castles, escape and capture, and includes the famous Robin Hood and his Merry Men of bandits in an attempt to save the true King and Ivanhoe.

A medieval treat!

Ivanhoe is a marvelous audiobook experience. While some of the old jargon and slow initial plot work of the novel may deter some, stick with the book and prepare to be dazzled by the heroines, Rowena and most of all, Rebecca.

Interesting

Ties in historically with what I have already read.Would have been more fun if cockney accents were used.

Excellent Rendition of a Classic

Ivanhoe the tale needs no introduction, if you are expecting the movie you will not find it although for Hollywood the movie did stay close. The performance was excellent marred only, strange to say, the book itself. This was meant for reading not performing so sometimes the conversations get a little clunky. Well worth the time.

A classic story of Mideival England

sometimes the flowery language made it difficult to follow the story, though the performance was clear.

Fabulous Performance!

Yet another book I could not get through in high school. So many times I have heard quotes from Sir Walter Scott but had never read one of his books. This performance had such a broad appeal. The narrator seemed to flow from one personality to another with great ease and panache. The story is entertaining and reveals much about society during this time in British history. I found it both educational and enlightening, as well as charming and engrossing. Try it!

A classic tale

After reading the White Company, which I found very enjoyable, I also loved this rendition of the classic story of Ivanhoe. The narrator delivers the story in a soothing voice.
I recommend it without reservations.

Surprised to love it

The narrator: I enjoyed this narrator. He did a lovely job. There were a few errors in pronunciation or incorrect voicing, but they were very minor and did not detract from the performance for me
The book: I started this book thinking that it would be a classic to be slogged through. I figured I would like the story, but would feel bogged down in the text. While the style of the language did take a little getting used to at the beginning, I was soon engrossed in the stor, and the variety of distinct characters. Even the formal language added to the feel of being transported into the epic story. It is criticized for historical inaccuracies, but even as a history geek, that did not bother me. The story is set in history, but is not intended to be a history book. It is more fairytale than historical with a romanticized view of legendary figures, brought to "life" with surprising depth.
