Publisher's summary

The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty.

But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude.

Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty - because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.

Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel's glittering facade: The cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence…and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess' petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.

Debut author Amy Ewing expertly crafts an enchanting story full of riches, rivalries, and riveting twists and turns that will keep listeners on the edge of their seats until the very end.

Excellent Plot Line

I struggled though this book as it seemed to have lengthy narrative from the main characters point of view. Yet, the story concept was refreshing. Which kept me going with this story. It started to pick up the pace during the second half of the book. Leaving you wanting more with a cliffhanger at the end.

Cliff hanger and delightful!

A bit slow to start but the ending was not what I was expecting! The story for me peaked at the end and left wondering how and why! The begin was good background though

Wonderful

Where does The Jewel rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I think this is my favourite audiobooks I've ever listened to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really liked Violet, but also Annabelle and Lucien.

Have you listened to any of Erin Spencer’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, this was my first Erin Spencer audiobook, but I very much enjoyed her voice and will be looking for her name again.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The beginning when Violet is visiting her family and talking to her sister Hazel.

your average teenage utopian story

This story seemed a little immature at times and parts of the story didn't match up. The story as a whole was interesting enough, but probably more suited to a younger, teenage audience.

What was the overall plot?

The plot of the book seemed a bit disorganized. You think the book is about violet getting pregnant but the author only seems to spend about 20% of the storyline on that. Then there is a storyline of the Duchess being jealous and slowly softening, then there is the duchesses family storyline, violets fronds storyline, Lucian's storyline, Ash's storyline. There are just a bunch of very mini story lines that never complete or fully develop. It basically seemed like a lot of nothing happened until the last chapter.
