What remained confined to the indigenous tribes of the Amazonian rainforest has now gone global in the last 25 years. We are talking about the powerful brew known by the name of ayahuasca, or yage.

Ayahuasca is a brew made from the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and Psychotria viridis leaf. Traditionally, the plant mixture was used for divination and making contact with the spirit world.

Taken as a brew, ayahuasca induces altered states of consciousness which last four to eight hours after drinking. These visions can be mild or extremely visionary. Traditionally, people would drink yage in a ceremonial session as a shamanic means of communication, but usually under the watchful eye of an experienced drinker.

This is a subject I have been interested in learning more about and I found this book accomplished that in an easy to follow format.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Ayahuasca, the spirit medicine.

This medicine is powerful and not for everyone.

I wish the author would have explained that the medicine is legal in some countries and illegal in others. Also, that this is very powerful medicine and not for the faint of heart. I think it might be a little bit reckless to include recipes implying anyone can facilitate. This should be done with a Shaman who has been trained in the traditional methods for a very long time. The Shaman holds the safe space. Additionally, there is extensive preparation for the participants in terms of special diet etc. None of this was mentioned. I do not agree that everyone should take it. This could easily be used recreationally and could be quite dangerous when not in a controlled environment.
