Publisher's summary

Awoken is a dark modern-day love story that’s more Grimm than Disney; if singing mice and dancing crabs are what you were looking for, this is not the book for you. Seances, time travel, and torture, however - if that’s your thing, you just might fit right in.

Grace didn’t believe in ghosts or demons, she thought magic was something that only lived in the pages of fairy tales.

How very wrong she was.

Hidden away most of his life, Beau had successfully managed to mask his gift from the world. Having the ability to commune with the dead wasn’t exactly the best conversation starter, and that was okay, he didn’t much like people anyway, until he walked back into Gallows Wood and into Grace’s life.

Struggling with the incessant onslaught of nightmares about her father’s untimely death, Grace had accepted that maybe she just wasn’t destined for a happily ever after.

Fate however had a skewed sense of humor. The deeper Grace delves into Beau’s world, the further she wanders from the safety of her own. Plagued by the spirit of a sadistic serial killer long dead, Grace must harness what power she can to defeat him and stay alive. Awakening family secrets that Grace could never have imagined to be true begs the question: Had she been surrounded by magic longer than she had thought?

How far into a world plagued by evil would you go to save the soul of the one you love?

Wow

This book was amazing! They story along with the narration kept me captivated! Highly recommend reading! Grace endures so much in her short life! The loss of her father and all the pain she hides and endures. Beau helps her keep her calm but with how it ends I can’t help but wonder what will happen next! I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next story Ascend!

That ending!!

I really enjoyed the start of this series. It did get off to a slow start but picked up half way through. I liked the characters and but I must say I do wish there was more content about the spirits but I loved the relationship between Grace and Beau! I really like the narrators voice however her voice would get really high pitched at times and I would have to lower the volume a lot. I can’t wait to continue the series and see where things go next!

Jumps around quite a bit

Overall it's a good story, except for the insta-romance. However, there were a few times when something would be happening and in the very next sentence it was suddenly the next day without any explanation. This was kinda jarring and unexpected. While I am curious what happens to the characters next I'm not sure I'm curious enough to get the next book.

Ominous, dark, and engrossing

4.5 stars!! What a dichotomous story! Woven throughout this dark, ominous, and perpetually foreboding supernatural tale is the undercurrent of a tragically sweet love story. Grace’s world is flipped upside down in every way possible when she meets Beau at college. Their romance is quite sweet and often adorable, but the tormented and tortuous dreams and events that plague Grace offer quite a sharp contrast. The tension of the book continues to build, slowly, but steadily, and by the time we are at the end, it is clear that it definitely isn’t the end. And that cliffhanger is heartstopping. I very much can’t wait to see where this tale will go from here, only imagining that the torment may have only scratched the surface for both Grace and Beau.

The narrator does a masterful job of cycling between the joyful, blissful highs of blossoming love, to the tormented and terrifying horror of the nightmares and pain. The realness of the awkward moments, the internal struggles, all captured so well in tone and inflection. It definitely added my enjoyment and immersion into the story.

Amazing!

This book is a YA . . . You could fill in the blank with so many different descriptions. The story is dark with ghosts, demonic spirits, gory descriptions, and more. But at the heart of it is a charming romance between two teenagers—Grace, a nice girl, and Beau, the hot new student at the college.

The vibe is a combination of creepy at times, scary to the point of hair-raising at others, and peppered with sweet moments as Grace and Beau fall in love. Grace is the girl next door type, still struggling with her father's death and plagued by disturbing dreams. While Beau is the super-hot boy, oblivious to the effect he has on women and gifted with the ability to communicate with the dead. Beau’s ability is more curse than gif, however, and prevents him from getting close to people. While Grace undervalues herself, convinced a happily-ever-after is not for her.

The romance between these two young people is lovely and all-encompassing. It was a joy to read. But with Beau’s paranormal abilities comes a very dark side, and not everyone is happy he can intervene in the other world. As the young lovers grow closer, this darkness pursues them, and Grace becomes a pawn to get to Beau.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book—it was equal parts sweet and scary. Plus, the narrator did a fantastic job! Enjoy!

Changes

Grace is at the start of another cruddy school year when she encounters Beau, the new student who captures her attention as well as most of the female population. only, he is different and she is just beginning to figure out that she is too.

I read this so you don't have to

This book is painfully slow and seems to go nowhere. I was hoping for more with the ghosts and spirit story line, but the book was taken over by a generic and rushed cliche romance. When we learned about he back story of the male lead, i was hopeful that we were going somehere, but it didn't take off like I'd wanted. I finshed the book hoping that SOMETHING would pull me in enough to give the next book in the series a try in hopes that it would be better, but no. I won't continue this series.
