NATIONAL BESTSELLER

Writer, director, and actor Avan Jogia delivers a bright and acidic poetry collection on fame, rage, love, and sadness. A biting postmortem of the modern age, for fans of Lana Del Rey and Atticus.

Avan Jogia grew up as a teen idol. He stumbled into the spotlight during the birth of the internet, the early days of Instagram and Twitter, before everyone online was a star. He spent his time in that spotlight writing, observing the cult of celebrity, the hilarity, the absurdity, and sometimes sinister side of being idolized before you’ve even had the chance to decide for yourself who you are.

Now, in his most revealing and honest work to date, he has assembled a book of poems as an act of self-dissection. Part boozy lovesick rage and part personal reflection on the nature of fame, Autopsy (of an Ex-Teen Heartthrob) is a sharp, tantalizing collection of poems examining Avan’s relationship with ego, idolatry, love as an act of worship, rage as an act of prayer, and sadness as confession.

Through vivid imagery (and sometimes startling honesty) Avan cuts himself open and observes the false gods he has worshipped, the ways he has sinned, and exhumes a version of himself that looks like someone we all know: a person searching for the means to cure pain, mend the wounds of insecurity, and satiate cravings for love.

It’s odd to say I liked it because it talks so much about sadness. I felt like a fly on the wall listening in to his life. Also, hilarious I laughed out loud several times. The imagery in his poetry is rough and vibrant. Avan’s usage of words and emotions are so engaging I listened to the book almost straight through. Probably one of the best books I’ve listened to in a while.

Profound

I don’t know how I should rate this because it is just speaking one’s mind and releasing one’s thoughts from mind to paper but I did love this. I made sure to annotate my physical copy as I was listening along and Avan did an amazing job!

Avan definitely has a way with his words. You can tell he has a deeper way of seeing the world than most. So many of the poems he wrote hit home for me as well as painted a picture of his experiences as a child actor who grew up in the industry. He shared his honest thoughts and experiences without shying away from a lot of the things people like to hide in Hollywood. He shared his pains and his love with us in a beautiful degree of words. It was painful to hear of some of his experiences and how so many of the connections he made in life fell short because people couldn’t see past his celebrity label. He made me want to reach out to him and invite him into my peace that I have found in life and allow him to just exist away from all the things that weight him down in life.

The Ugly Side of Hollywood Revealed Again

It had it's moments and some really good lines like "Fame is the only way to get people to read your book." and "I'm not a human being, I just play one on TV." But, then there were parts for instance: there were two poems one called "Fame" and the other called "Sex". It seems like the way they were written was like a HS assignment. You know in English class they are trying to get you to write by free associating.

It was okay
