Janet is a twenty-nine-year-old woman whose parents were murdered as they walk in a nature preserve. No one knows who or why they were murdered. The police think it’s a robbery gone bad. But Janet believes the police are wrong—that there is more to her parents’ murder than anyone knows.
As she is going through her parents’ effects, looking for clues, she finds her mother’s laptop. On it, she discovers a diary created by her mother of raising her only child, Janet. As you would expect, Janet’s memories of many of the events are very different from her mother’s descriptions. So, Janet inserts her perspective into the document. The next day, all of her changes are gone. She thinks that maybe she forgot to save them and puts them in again. When she returns to the document a day later, her additions are still there, but they have been changed. All criticism of her mother has been removed. Her mother is now the wise purveyor of good choices, to be ignored at Janet’s peril.
Janet realizes that her mother is making these changes from the other side. She immediately asks about the murder—who did it and why. Her mother won’t tell her.
Now Janet has to figure it out for herself while her mother and father continue to try to guide their only child’s life and hide the secrets they don’t want Janet to know.
