The novel details the tragic and futile Crawford Expedition of 1782, which marked one of the American Revolution's most brutal defeats on the western frontier.
In the spring of 1782, the western settlements are being ravaged by Native American raids, fueled by the British and spurred by the recent, horrific Gnadenhutten massacre. Brigadier General William Irvine, despairing of getting a professional army from a war-weary Congress, reluctantly authorizes a punitive expedition led by a volunteer militia—a "mob of vengeful men".
The protagonist, Colonel William Crawford, a respected veteran and friend of Washington, is pulled from his peaceful retirement to lead the campaign against the Native American towns at Sandusky. He accepts only to prevent the command from falling to the brutal and reckless Colonel David Williamson, a leader from the Gnadenhutten massacre. Crawford is narrowly elected commander, but his authority is undermined by the militia's overwhelming thirst for vengeance, which he fears will lead to disaster.
Leading the undisciplined force deep into the Ohio wilderness, Crawford is immediately consumed by a sense of dread, believing they are being led into a trap. At the Sandusky plains, the Americans are outmaneuvered and ambushed by a cohesive combined force of Wyandot, Delaware, and Shawnee warriors, supported by British Rangers and Loyalists like Simon Girty.
The Battle of Sandusky is a chaotic and devastating rout. In the panicked retreat, Crawford and his surgeon, Dr. John Knight, become separated from the main body. Driven by paternal despair, Crawford attempts to circle back to the battlefield in a desperate search for his captured son and son-in-law, sealing his own fate. Crawford is captured, and in a final, gruesome act of retribution for Gnadenhutten, he is tortured and executed by the Native American warriors. Dr. Knight manages a harrowing escape and carries the traumatic account back to the settlements, turning the defeat into a martyr’s call to arms that only serves to make the frontier war more vicious.
