光源氏 三七歳
主な登場人物 玉鬘
むらさきのふぢばかまをば見よと言ふ
二人泣きたきここち覚えて
玉鬘はこれからの身の処し方について煩悶していた。冷泉帝へ宮仕えをすることも、光源氏の庇護でこのまま暮らしていくことも、それぞれ悩ましい問題があるのだった。
大宮（おおみや）が亡くなり、喪に服した玉鬘のもとに夕霧が訪れる。玉鬘が兄弟ではないと知った夕霧は藤袴の花を差し入れ、玉鬘に恋愛の情を打ち明けるが、玉鬘は驚いて奥へ引きこもる。
玉鬘を宮仕えに出しながら手元に置いてひそかに恋人にしておきたいと考える源氏であったが、その思惑を見抜いている夕霧は内大臣が懸念していることを伝え、源氏の行動を牽制するのだった。
玉鬘は十月に宮仕えに出ることになった。その日が近づくにつれ、玉鬘のもとには求婚していた男たちから別れを惜しむ手紙が次々と届けられた。
