田川敬太郎は大学を出てから職に就けずに悩んでいた。
そんな折に同じ下宿先の役所勤めらしい森本という男と湯屋で出会って親しくなるが、ある時、森本は敬太郎に手紙を残して突然姿を消してしまう。手紙によると、下宿代を滞らせていたことで主人夫婦との面倒を避けたのだという。だが、貯めた下宿代は返すつもりであることや、敬太郎を気遣った内容もあり、梅の鉢の盆栽と自分の愛用していたステッキを敬太郎に譲る旨も書いてあった。
その後、敬太郎は変わらず職を得られずにいたため、大学の友人である須永の叔父の田口に仕事の世話を頼もうとする。たまたま森本への返事の手紙をポストに投函したその夜、敬太郎は田口に会う機会に恵まれた。その日は挨拶のみで終わったが、日を改めて敬太郎は幾度か田口を訪ねようと試みた。しかしながら、すれ違うばかりで直接会って話すことが叶わず、次第に田口を頼ることを諦めかけていた折に、田口から屋敷に呼びだされ、敬太郎はようやく念願の仕事の世話の話を切り出すのだが……
