倒幕の際、フランスを訪れていた渋沢は、
格段に進歩した西欧の国情を目の当たりにして、
このままでは日本が植民地化されるのは時間の問題であると危惧し、
一日でも早く日本の国力を蓄えなければならないと悟った。
国家の力とはすなわち経済力、商工業の力である。
その当時、日本の商工業は国家的にも軽視され未熟であったが、
渋沢は先の時代を見通して様々な事業を行った。
女子教育・商業教育の必要性を説いて優れた実業家の育成に尽力。
国富をもたらす地方繁栄策の言明。国民の元気振興を目指した独立自営論。
社会問題解決のための福祉事業の推進。
将来の日米商戦を予言し、その対策を提言。
明治においてその先進的な取組みには多くの反対もあったが、
日本が今日のような発展を遂げて列強と肩を並べるまでに至ったのは、
まさに渋沢の先見性によるものである。
時代の風を柔軟に読み取る渋沢栄一の言葉は、
日本のこれからを見通す助けとなるであろう。
