Attempted Vampirism, book one

It’s not easy being a vampire - just ask Jonathan. As the 32nd lord of Bloodhaven, Jonathan is a vampire noble. Alas, he’s a noble in name only. Forget gold, diamonds, and bountiful estates. All he has to his name are one cozy - some would say dilapidated - castle and a reputation as a fine scholar specializing in ancient lore. Of course, given the horrible ends both his father and grandfather met in pursuit of fame and fortune, it’s probably for the best that he enjoys the quiet life. Sadly, his quiet life is about to meet a horrible end of its own.

Think tax collectors are bad? How about...vampire tax collectors? After a run-in with the Blood Alliance Department of Taxation leaves Jonathan with nothing, he needs a lot of money, and he needs it now. But at least he can rely on his faithful servants for help, right? Wrong. The only servant he’s got left is his old but faithful butler, Miles. To get his castle and his stuff back, Jonathan and Miles have to take some risks, but the gods aren’t going to make it easy for them. After all, these are the same gods who took at least three tries to get the world mostly right, and they have some wonderful surprises up their sleeve.

Of course, one mission won’t be enough, and there’s nothing scarier than vampire tax collectors.

If Jonathan wants to get his castle back, he’ll have to go on more missions. Tougher missions. Scarier missions. Missions that make him question the sanity of dwarf architecture. And their newest mission is a doozy. But if he and the others can survive sea monsters, ancient evils, and an unlikely pair of allies, they might just strike it rich. One way or another, Jonathan is getting his castle back.

once you get use to the authors writing style these books become amazing. love the story telling and the adventure.

I want more!!

I've took a liking to Johnathan and Co. I would love to get some more from this series, but sadly I think not. Its is good standing alone though.

The humor is worth it

My first experience with the author was Two Necromancers series and I can’t get enough. Narration is well done with just the right touch of dry humor. For a whimsical story the characters are filled out and world development is good. I’m looking forward to any other stories by the author.

What an absolute delight!

I saw this on a sale recently and I recognized Joel Froomkin's name because I absolutely loved another series he narrated so I gave it a shot. I absolutely loved this, and I really hope there is more of this series coming (hopefully with Froomkin's vocal accompaniment again).

Very interesting book with a good pace setting and a character development. I would hope that there are more following books with Jonathan getting his castle back and all

Loved it

Really enjoyed the characters and the story. Its imaginative and just lovely. The voice actor took me by surprise at first but he is really good at portraying all the different voices.

So worth the time!

I'm a big fan of the author and read these books awhile ago but when I saw the opportunity to get the audible versions I grabbed it. The narrator is terrific, the stories are so, so good. The author manages to grab the funny side of horror and treat it as if all is normal, in a most humorous way. If your brand of humor is "not normal" you'll probably enjoy these stories.

Enjoyable

It reads like a D&D campaign - half expected the epilogue to reveal a group of D&D players finishing up a session and making plans for the next session. It does get repetitive, I'm not a fan of some of the transitions, but overall I really enjoyed.
