Publisher's Summary

"Of all the people who have affected my life and influence the choices I've made, none has been more important than my father."

So begins the autobiography of legendary boxing trainer and commentator Teddy Atlas, who grew from the rebellious son of a doctor to a man who embraces, and lives by, his father's values and code.

In this gritty, spellbinding tale, Atlas recounts his fascinating life as a juvenile delinquent on the streets of Staten Island; as a boxer and Golden Gloves champion under the tutelage of famed trainer Cus D'Amato; as a companion to the dangerous, unpredictable Sammy "the Bull" Gravano, up until the day Gravano turned rat and brought down crime boss John Gotti; and as a trainer of champions and contenders, among them 14-year-old Mike Tyson and heavyweight Michael Moorer, whom he led to the crown with a win over Evander Holyfield.

Equally engrossing are Teddy Atlas's accounts of training Twyla Tharp, dancer and choreographer, for her successful comeback at the age of 42; his work with actor Willem Dafoe, preparing him for his role as a concentration camp boxer in the film Triumph of the Spirit; his journey to Poland to choreograph the film's boxing scenes; and his own performance in movies such as Play It to the Bone

In sharing his stories, Atlas reveals the philosophy by which he lives. Like Teddy Atlas - inimitable, tough, honest, and wise - this book inspires. It is about so much more than boxing. It is a story of overcoming hardships, of compassion for those in need, of tremendous personal integrity, and of personal and professional triumph.

Editor's Pick

A fighter-philosopher
"Teddy Atlas has earned his reputation as a soothsayer, troublemaker, and generally controversial boxing mainstay. From training to commentating, Teddy’s done it his way, all the way. What I love most about this listen is his unflinchingly honest criticism of boxing promoters and their ruling bodies. He’s an ardent advocate for the fighters as well as the purity of the sport—even when that loyalty has come at great personal cost. There’s tons of appeal for self development fans, too, in Teddy’s hard-won life philosophies stemming from his troubled youth and stellar career."

Sensational

Listening to Teddy talk so openly about his life and the raw experiences he had as a troubled kid, to a boxing icon has been nothing short of amazing. I couldn’t stop listening. And as an avid boxing fan and a fan of Teddy himself, I would recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves the sport and is interested in hearing the personal insights of a legend, both in the ring and out. Tip of the hat to you Mr. Atlas. Well done sir.

Boxer to Boxer.

I don’t know where to start. But, I’ll give it a Go ... like Teddy. I’m bad with Computers and the Internet . But, this Book I’ve read Several times and Love it. I’m involved with Boxing too. And to Echo Teddy’s Sentiment about being Kind and Generous to a fault .. I must testify to that. Being he Donated money to my Gym over 10 yrs ago. And it’s still goin Strong .. . This Man is a Inspiration and Hero to me. And any time I Get Frustrated or feel. Little overwhelmed I turn to him.. Thankyou Teddy for everything....

Well worth a listen!

I particularly liked hearing Teddys story in his own voice, and his struggles are familiar though set in an entirely different landscape. Atlas reveals what makes him tick as well as continue to campaign for a more stable and consistent Boxing regulations & organization. Teddys story shows the ugly side of people, (and what they're involved in), doesn't *have* to have Corruption as a default state. And if it doesn't have to have Corruption, then get it the hell out of the sport. Thank you Teddy for being one of the good ones. We need more like you, cheers.

Fascinating biography by legendary Teddy

I am glad Teddy himself narrated it. The book is more than boxing, it is about people, relationships, fears, insecurities, loyalty, betrayal and all that juice stuff.

I couldn't put it down. Finished it within 3 days.

Now when I see him talking on interviews, youtube etc, i feel like I know him. And it is pleasure to get to know him. He is a kind, caring , compassionate man with big heart.

Blessing to him and his family and people who helped him with the audiobook.

Teddy’s read makes it a must-have for boxing fans

If anybody else was reading, I would have just purchased the kindle book. I don’t usually buy audio books, but I had to hear the story in Teddy’s words. I am not disappointed. Thanks Teddy!

To a young trainer.

I am a young trainer of kickboxers. I am 34 have been listening to mr atlas for many years now and have learned a mountain of wisdom from him. You don’t need to be a fighter, an athlete or a coach to appreciate his story, wisdom and his unique way of presenting it.

Amazing!

Haven’t reviewed in a while, but this book was so amazing I had to write something. Teddy Atlas is so admirable, even with his tough exterior, the heart and brain work overtime. Having him narrate makes it so much better. You feel like you’re sitting around and sharing stories. The occasional interviews add a lot — a great way to update the narrative. Thank you Teddy.

Inspiring story of a boxing legend

One of the best autobiographies I have ever read/listened to. I bought this after listening to boxing life Stories which gives you a real flavour for who Teddy Atlas is. Being a massive boxing fan who’s idol growing up was Mike Tyson it was great to peak behind the curtain.
Teddy is a colourful character with an amazing life story not just in boxing but his day to day life. I enjoy learning from elite sports people Or people who have started with nothing and earned their way to the very top. Great story and a must read or listen. Teddy at his true best read by the man himself.

Real.

Was not a fan of Atlas from bits of shouting I saw on ESPN. I now have respect for him and I am truly intrigued. Great book, great stories, anything but a chronological history of his life. A boxing fan's must read. Anyone interested in legendary characters and fascinating tails add it to your collection.

Great listen. Only one caviat.

Thought it was great. I didn't quite like the interviewer, with all respect, the question's and comments especially seemed to alternate between fawning/ obsequious to asking questions already answered. However the idea, despite being definately unneccesary on the whole, did provide some moments of levity, if not insight.

Emotional, funny and heartwarming.

Very emotional story. The way Teddy tells it is straight from the heart. I’m so glad I used audible instead of reading this as a lot of the emotion would of been lost.

Funny and heart warming. Honest and humbling. Couldn’t rate this enough.

Fantastic. Thank you for sharing this with us Teddy.
