Rumänien 1945: Auf Anweisung Stalins werden alle arbeitsfähigen Männer und Frauen deutscher Herkunft zwischen 17 und 45 Jahren in sowjetische Arbeitslager deportiert. Ihr Schicksal schildert Herta Müller am Beispiel Leopolds.

Für die Aufnahmen zu dem atmosphärischen Hörspiel fuhr der vielfach ausgezeichnete Regisseur Kai Grehn an Originalschauplätze in die Ukraine, ließ alte Lager-Lieder neu einspielen und engagierte ein hochkarätiges Ensemble. Zudem verwendete er eine Tonaufnahme des 2006 verstorbenen Lyrikers und ehemaligen Lagerinsassen Oskar Pastior, dessen Geschichte Herta Müller in Atemschaukel erzählt.
