Better than the Game!

It's a big challenge to condense such a lengthy and disjointed narrative into one compelling novel, and Gordon has done an excellent job. Perhaps all I could have asked for as an Assassin's Creed fan is a bit more of the Sci-Fi elements, but even the game barely spends much time on it. In this way though, it reads almost like a believable historical story, and it's much more moving emotionally than the game, especially because there is a deeper sense of scale in both time and in the vastness of the Greek world.

I would love to see Gordon continue the story into it's more fantastical Atlantean continuation. the game is somewhat commical, but Gordon could give it the grit and weight it deserves. Something the game lacks in Elysium.

Fantastic!

Having played the game, I sort of knew what to expect from the story. However, events in the book are changed from the game to suit the flow and narrative better.
Amazing performance from the VA!

Let down by the narration

I love the Assassin’s Creed games and have listened to all of the previous game themed books written by Oliver Bowden, so was a bit disappointed that this book had a different author. I’m happy to say that the book is just as well written as its predecessors and follows the epic storyline of the game well, so if you haven’t finished the game yet I would recommend to not read / listen to the book yet or you’ll ruin the experience! The audio version is unfortunately severely let down by the dreadful narration. I found it extremely annoying that the narrator did not even know how to pronounce the very well known names in the story, such as Hippocrates, the ‘father of medicine’ and Socrates, the classical Greek philosopher, or even Pythagoras; it made me wonder if she even understood the characters she was reading about! On top of this, the ‘voices’ for some of the characters are pretty awful and really do distract you from the story. It’s definitely one that would be better to read rather than listen too; if I didn’t want this book for completion of the seres, I would seriously consider returning it and I’ll be wary of buying audiobooks read by this narrator in future

A Decent Overview of the Game

This novel is a great overview of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey’s story. Some events are changed, condensed, or omitted entirely but the broad strokes are still there. Gordon Doherty is a good writer and I greatly enjoyed his writing.

I had to abandon it

I just could not finish it. From scenario to scenario with not much transition. It just did not hold my attention I’m afraid.

The narration was ok when voicing Kassandra but having other people with, say, a West Country accent just did not fit in any shape or form with Ancient Greece

I had to focus intensively to not miss a word.

I was constantly rewinding the recording to catch what the reader said. Speaking in such a strong ascent.
