Publisher's summary

Almost three years ago, a car crash took Audrey's dad and scarred her for life. Now 18, she returns to her hometown for the first time after the accident.

She's here to start again. Go to college and have fun. Make new friends. Get over the past. But the past won't let go.

Asher is here - her first kiss, her first heartbreak. More handsome and distant than ever, he's still the boy who used to be her best friend. That was before he changed into someone she hardly knows anymore - the boy who started getting into fights and gave her the cold shoulder for years.

Asher isn't what she needs. In fact, she hates him and should try her best to keep away from him.

Yet her body doesn't seem to care about how she feels, and maybe, just maybe this time her body got it right. Not that she has much of a choice. Asher draws her like a bright flame, and if she isn't careful, she'll burn.

And that may not be such a bad thing after all....

Standalone novel. No cliffhanger. Warning: this book contains graphic language, sex, and violence. Mature listeners only. Not intended for young listeners.

Outrageously stupid decisions on repeat.

I just finished a book I adored by this author so I had high hopes. Umm, this book is horrible. I know she is writing about late teens to early twenties but there is very little depth to anyone and they are all idiots. indecision, angst, more angst, plot holes, more angst, life threatening bad decisions on repeat. I got nearly to the end and just had to stop listening. This book should be titled, 'Dude in distress with a death wish.'

Simple HEA

Sure tragic things happen in this book but all of it is very predictable. The character development is great however some of the decisions these "kids" make really tells you their age. Teenagers!! Uhhh

It's a cute story nonetheless. Don't expect heavy thinking on anyone's part. Go with the flow.

The narrators are great. They did an awesome job.

Enjoy!

Loved this Storyline!

Okay yes this storyline has so much angst and adult situations happening to young people! But, Asher and Audrey may be young but wow they are so mature and strong.
Great book and I love the secondary characters whose books I can’t wait to listen 🎧 to.

My Two Cents

So this is included with my membership. It was free during the time I listened to it. Not sure if it will remain that way but I think it should. We will get to why I think that in a bit. But first let’s talk about the good.

The writer (JR) did a great job with building the characters and allowing you to get to know them to formulate a connection. I enjoyed the narrators although it did take a moment to adjust to CJ. It was a bit forced and intense for the character to me but it did not deter me from listening. I did get use to his voice. Overall he did a good job just needs to work a bit more on inflection to make it sound more natural.
No issues with SC she was superb, to me.

The intimate scenes where great! Very nicely done. I felt sated ;)

Now for the not so good. And why I feel it should remain free with the membership. The age of the characters made the story a bit unbelievable. I understand it is fiction but come on. High schoolers living on their very own at 18? Not a single one still living with their parents. Oh wait just one who just so happen to be the tragedy of the bunch, yeah no, I’m not buying it. It took away from the story. AND an 18 yr old that owns their own tattoo parlor is NOT happening I own not a one tattoo but I do own a business and unless he started tattooing at 1yr old he is not experienced enough to be “the best” at SKIN art AND own his own shop. Between CJ’s reading and the reminder that they are all JUST getting out of high school I found myself disappointed. Had the characters been in their late 20’s or early thirties it would have made the story better, even CJ would have passed.

While I know the term “MAN” is used in this book referring to the main character but I’m sorry he’s not a man yet. Yes hard and difficult events/experiences have shaped part of this young man’s life but he is still inexperienced and has A LOT more growing to do and therapy.

Overall it was not a bad listen it did have an HEA. I did start the next book Tyler cause of course there is a cliffhanger from Asher.

Tyler is a bit older but not by much. I have not finished it yet I wanted to stop and write this review but it is starting out ok. We shall see

really wanted to like this.

I really wanted to like this book but it really is too much young angst and very repetitive. The characters were very flat even with the development. It was almost all internal monologue on repeat. Got about halfway through but couldn't finish it.
Narrators were good atleast.

Wanted to like...

Crazy how some people are so self absorbed, I know it's just a book, but that doesn't mean it's all fiction. I want to finish listening but it's HARD.

Disappointed smh

I was looking forward to this series but I couldn’t finish it. Too much depressing and moping around, no character development. The whole book was just one note. The Audrey intro book really set my hopes up and now with just a couple of chapters left I can’t bring myself to finish because everything is kinda repetitive. Not worth it to be honest!

Needed more plot

While I like a good trauma filled main character I do wish the depth of both MC trauma was written better. I know what it’s like to not live a cookie cutter life & bad decision after bad decision seems like the only right decision. This book just need more.

Emotional

I loved this story.
My heart broke for Asher. The poor lad couldn’t catch a break.

My only problem with this, was that sometimes, I couldn’t tell which character was talking because the narrator made some of them sound exactly the same. Even when changing to a different gender.

Okay story

I loved the male voice talent, the female I thought was a robot. Fast forward and fell asleep for her parts.
Had to power through. Not sure if I’d read the others if the female talent is the same.
Overall it was okay.

difficult topics well handled

not all family has the same blood as you, although Asher has a long way to go, he's bound to make it with the friends he has. this book covers the topics of physical and emotional abuse, homelessness and the loss of parents, so if those topics upset you then avoid the book. however these were handled well and very much put you in the mindset of what a child and young adult may go through in such circumstances. I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

Great start to the series

Truly enjoyed the story. It was very emotional. I’m guessing since the rest of the series are of their friends, I’m looking forward for any updates on Asher & Audrey in the rest of the series. The narrators were really great also.

Perfect Narration

This tragic coming of age story covers dark territory of child abuse and death. The voices were excellent and sounded also like 18 year olds. I also listend to the prequel, Kiss me Goodbye which I advise - it set the stage very well for this book. I'm hooked for the rest of the series!

Good story horrible narration

I read book 2 of this series in error that was wonderful even if some parts were disturbing ..This story though was read terribly which ruined it for me. So glad I read book 2 first by mistake so I know the stories themselves are really good

I loved it!

There’s a bleak sadness to Asher’s story that was truly heart wrenching at times. Asher (Inked Brotherhood Series #1) is a story of young love, harrowing secrets, and true heartwarming friendships. I highly recommend it.

A young adult romance

Childhood best friends grow apart, then find their way back together again..
Asher is a tormented young man, mum died, brother left and dad is a violent drunk..
Audrey is a hurt teenager and scarred from a car accident tgat killed her dad and that Ashers dad caused....
All Asher needs is love and support, but can Audrey forgive the past hurts he caused??
I enjoyed this story and Samantha Cooks narration but C.J. was very slow and sounded a bit boring..

a really long slow burn 🔥

it was a story of young love which I don't really follow but thought i would as its on plus catalogue.
I wasn't too keen on Jo Ravens other book Micah, so gave her a miss but i did enjoy this book.
as I said it was a loooong slow burn and I started to get a bit impatient as lots of things were repeated. the heroine Needed her butt kicked and the hero, well he just needed confidence to trust but that was sadly missing in life. hence the storyline. it was a difficult topic and when you string it together with their ages, it makes you realise how situations like that can keep you trapped.
I persisted and enjoyed where it went and looking fwd to tyler as he is a bit older as well.
loved Samantha cook and C.J.Mission....haven't heard his narrating before....but both were great.

Heartfelt connections

Amazing story, character depth and pace.

Jo Raven never fails to make complexities in her stories flow easily and with honesty and truth, not rushing or skipping emotional walls.

CJ Mission really puts his soul into this narration, it feels true and his changes in cadence are on point. He really brings Asher to life. I could listen to him for hours, and I did, completing this book in one sitting.
