Publisher's summary

In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher tells the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Wars when only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabers."

Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother (not to mention the hyperspace hairdo), Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction, weathering the wild ride of manic depression and lounging around various mental institutions. It's an incredible tale - from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

Fantastic

Such a hard-hitting hilarious book about crap we go through in life, only with a celebrity, Star Wars, alcoholic, drug addict, Bipolar twist. And nothing can beat Carrie narrating it. I'm so glad she did. Miss you Carrie & thank you.

God, I love this woman

Well written and fantastically read. Carrie, again, gives us a frank look at addiction and mental illness and manages to make it hilarious.

I lost interest sorry

What disappointed you about Wishful Drinking?

I thought by the title that it would focus on some thoughts on substance abuse and how she'd grown as an artist. Instead I got a pitch for electro-shock therapy, something my grandfather had, and not a topic I would choose to hear as I prefer other sorts of stories. I liked it for a while as it's witty and self-reflective, to a point. But then I lost interest because it felt a little too insular and feeling sorry for yourself -- that the ideas that fans masturbate offended her was my final, ah no, and I went for some 'brain-' pod casts you offer.

Would you ever listen to anything by Carrie Fisher again?

Yes, if she were reading fiction or a children's story or postcards from the edge. I think her love of 'shock' therapy should be clearly acknowledged as in the other title 'shockaholic.' I like Miss Fisher a lot, and I empathize to a certain extent but it's too hollywood preachy for me, because I've been through far worse.

What three words best describe Carrie Fisher’s voice?

Wry, precise, thin

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Wishful Drinking?

the fourth mention of shock therapy or where it was placed -- perhaps leading into it but it literally felt like an ad for her doctor was coming next and I'd rather listen to jz read shakespeare or something more creative or give someone else a try... so sick of famous actors always getting all the work!

Any additional comments?

I don't know if it's worth it to me to pay 14.95 a month to you on top of my amazon prime membership - if you offered a 7.99 add on no problem i'd do it but with spotify and tidal and itunes and amazon and kindle -- I will only listen periodically to a book here because I hate podcasts and you tube videos for my way of ingesting knowledge -- I prefer charts, diagrams and of course, I'm a television producer, so I present stories there. My "AUDIO" time is reserved for music which I already have on spotify and itunes -- the only way i'd move to amazon would be if you bought spotify and I could take all my playlists with me and make them more customizable.

you tube music is a good product you should suggest modeling after them since google steals amazon's ideas.

thanks for the opportunity to respond. I love Carrie Fisher, I loved star wars as a kid, just now, I'm into work with more revelations and spiritual truth.

A Naturally Humorous Writer

Carrie Fisher was a talented writer with an incredibly sharp sense of humor. Too many authors try too hard to be funny but miss the mark. Carrie just seemed to naturally know comedy, which made Wishful Drinking enjoyable to listen to. She likewise expertly narrated her own work. She had a unique life, growing up with famous parents, starring in an iconic movie series and then writing and performing. She accepts responsibility for her own troubles, and never takes a "poor me" attitude. I strongly recommend this book.

Interesting <br />

Overall, a fun listen. Carrie's candor is warm, but sometimes uncomfortable - appropriate, really. I have recommended this to friends.
