Publisher's Summary

In Wishful Drinking, Carrie Fisher tells the true and intoxicating story of her life with inimitable wit. Born to celebrity parents, she was picked to play a princess in a little movie called Star Wars when only 19 years old. "But it isn't all sweetness and light sabers."

Alas, aside from a demanding career and her role as a single mother (not to mention the hyperspace hairdo), Carrie also spends her free time battling addiction, weathering the wild ride of manic depression and lounging around various mental institutions. It's an incredible tale - from having Elizabeth Taylor as a stepmother, to marrying (and divorcing) Paul Simon, from having the father of her daughter leave her for a man, to ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.

Falls Short

I have always loved Carrie Fisher's sense of humor and I still do. But this book sounds more like a letter to someone who doesn't know her history, who has the same mental problems, and she is trying to say, "See what I have been through and am still laughing. You can do it too." She does say that this is basically the monolog she recites and she wrote it down so not to forget it. Unfortunately, her reading of it falls short.

Carrie Fisher was truly brilliant

I haven't laughed out loud at an audiobook since I listened to The Princess Diarist last year, this book had me cracking up several times. Carrie Fisher's life was incredibly unique and yet still very relatable to anyone who grew up with crazy parents. In Wishful drinking she details the various ways in which George Lucas ruined her life, how addiction and manic depression have impacted her life and family, and she's not afraid to admit that she has made mistakes in her sobriety.

Her death broke my heart in a way I really didn't expect and having her life told in her own words and voice is a great comfort as well as being very witty and we'll written.

The Force was NOT with Her.

I had no expectations when I bought this book. Carrie Fisher had recently died.

This book in many ways makes me sad. I had always thought, for no good reason, that movie stars were "those" people. They become icons, if they are lucky, live rich and full fulling lives. And maybe that is all true. However, they are also just normal people who have normal problems. and this book touches on some of those thay Carrie had. A great listen told directly by her. At all times funny and sad.

Worth a listen!

Whilst it's cruel on her family and friends, it seems Carrie liked to party. Rest in peace

Trying to be funny?

I so struggled to get to the end of this book. Not wishing to speak ill of the dead but Carrie Fisher tells her life story as a string of comedy moments among the rich and famous. When in fact her struggles with alcohol and drug addictions and being bi-polar make for tragic listening!

Wit galore, but ever so short

Having listened to a lot of interviews with Carrie, I might have been expecting a bit too much from this collection of anecdotes. She makes for a fantastic narrator, but the book lacks substance, only touching on such topics like her relationship with Paul Simon or influence of places she lived in.

best ending ever

Carrie just broke me and made me with the ending of this book. I'm sorry I wasn't there to see her perform wishful drinking, it's funny warm and truely brilliant, much like the author. RIP courageous Carrie x
